In a world where unpaid care - for ourselves or each other - is devalued, renewing our welfare state should be an ambitious act that reexamines and reflects what our lives really look like. We need to view our social security as a way to redistribute wealth, not leave our communities in poverty.

What if we championed and grew the foundations of our welfare state rather than continued to minimise them? It feels against the grain, but it's an ambition that we think deserves more support if we're ever to truly build a caring society.

(Not to mention the fact that, because there is no right to compassionate leave in this country apart from for dependents, quite a lot of sick notes are actually signing people off work because e.g. one of their parents has just died)
