#TodayInQueerHistory 12 April 2024 Preserving our past is important. It proves our existence and shares our stories through the years. Today, the History Trust of South Australia launched Destination Fabulous:Save The Queen, a project to restore the ICONIC Priscilla: Queen of the Desert bus.

I've just read Octavia Butler "The Parable of the Sower" & "Parable of the Talents", I've skimmed these before in an undergrad way, but so glad to now take time & read them properly. Bleak, hard reading but inspired. Written for our times, literally, was set in the 2020s & on.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 10 (1984) Bookshops are a cornerstone of the queer community. They help us find our voices. #OTD, Gay's the Word in London was raided as part of Operation Tiger. £000s of stock was confiscated as "obscene". Writers, publishers and book lovers came to the shops defence.

Diana said “HIV does not make people dangerous to know. You can shake their hands and give them a hug."

I started today really hopeful but it's been a bit rubbish. Here's hoping the evening sunshine is enough to cheer me up.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 8 (1918) #OTD British racing car driver, fighter pilot and trans trailblazer Roberta Cowell was born. Roberta's story, including pioneering gender affirming surgery, made her a celebrity. In 1954 Picture Post paid her £8k for her story - around £190k in today's ££.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 7 (2023) Sci fi writer, comics creator, poet, essayist and tarot expert Rachel Pollack died #OTD. Rachel wrote DCs Doom Patrol, and introduced Coagula, the first trans superhero. Her work won World Fantasy Awards, Arthur C Clarke Awards and was nominated for a Nebula.

Does anyone else really suffer on that first day back after a long weekend? Like, what am I even doing? Why am I so tired?

#TodayInQueerHistory April 6 (1955) Director, producer and documentary maker Robert Epstein was born #OTD Rob has won awards for his documentary films, including Oscars. He won his second in 1990 for Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, which told the story of the US AIDS Memorial quilt.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 5 (1997) Poet Allen Ginsberg expressed his desires openly in his writing died #OTD. He challenged accusations of obscenity and had laws changed. In his Who's Who entry, he listed his partner Peter Orlovsky as his spouse. Allen is best known for his poem Howl.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 4 (1981) Liberté! Egalité! Fraternité! Over 10k people took to Paros' streets in a march organised by the Comité d'urgence anti-répression homosexuelle. This pioneering protest was a real turning point for LGBTQIA+ rights and activism in France and led to Paris Pride.

#TodayInQueerHistory April 1 (1942) Sci-fi writer and literary critic Samuel R. Delany is born. His well-known works include Nova and Dhalgren, and he has won Hugo and Nebula awards. Delany has described himself as gay since he was an adolescent, and his works explore sexuality and society.

#TodayInQueerHistory March 30 (1834) Famed diarist and industrialist Anne Lister weds her partner Ann Walker in a private blessing ceremony in Holy Trinity Church in Goodramgate in Halifax. The church now has a special plaque to commemorate the event.

What a magical day today in Bristol. Trans Pride was such a great community led and community focussed event. I'm so proud of my younglings, giving speeches, marching and making their voices heard.

Transwomen are women. Transmen are men. Transphobic people are are trash.
