#TodayInQueerHistory July 16 (1983) To prevent the spread of HIV, men who had sex with men were banned from donating blood. There was a huge need for blood to help patients, so many lesbian caregivers stepped up. The Blood Sisters had the 1st blood drive #OTD, with the blood going to HIV patients.

This very much reflects how much effort I put in in team tasks in general, at work and in personal life.

Today is the 11th anniversary of the Gender Recognition Act here in Ireland. I will always celebrate this day as the State finally recognized my gender. Decades of campaigning led to the Act. I owe a debt to those who went before me We were the 4th country in the world to bring in such legislation

One reviewer said "one is apt to imagine that it is a man who is singing.” Annie married her dresser Annie Ryan, convincing a minister she was a man. She also married other women! Annie Hindle died #OTD

#TodayInQueerHistory July 13 (1954) Frida Kahlo (died #OTD) was a visionary artist who broke the mould in many ways. She is an inspiration to many today. She explored her experiences through her art, rejected societal norms, and explored relationships with Josephine Baker and Georgia O'Keefe.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 11 (1895) The Wilde family had a queer icon in Oscar. #OTD his niece Dorothy "Dolly" Wilde was welcomed into the world. Dolly was as witty and wordy as her uncle, and was known for her relationships with heiress Marion "Joe" Carstairs and writer Natalie Clifford Barney.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 8 (2020) Dr Flossie Wong-Staal was a molecular virologist who cloned HIV to better understand it, how it functioned and how to test for it. Her work on genetic mapping also enabled large scale blood screening to test donated blood. She died #OTD aged 73.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 7 (1973) GLAD TO BE GAY and HOMOSEXUALS ARE HUMANS were just some of the slogans on placards at Brighton's first Pride which took place #OTD. The march, from Norfolk Square to the Ship Hotel was part of a week of events organised by the Sussex Gay Liberation Front.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 5 (2013) Designed by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia, the Intersex flag flies for the first time. Morgan wanted to create a design "that is not derivative." Morgan also said the design "symbolises the right to be who and how we want to be."

#TodayInQueerHistory July 4 (1976) Vroom vroom! 🏍️🏍️ The Dykes on Bikes have their 1st official outing at San Francisco's Freedom Day parade. A rider quipped they were "Dykes on bikes" - it was overheard by a reporter and the name stuck. They are regular fixtures at queer events around the world.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 3 (2016) #OTD, Alexandra Williams a co-founder of BLM Toronto paused Toronto Pride for about 30 mins to discuss how pride could better support Black, disabled and indigenous community members. Pride directors said she was "extremely reasonable and made a lot of sense."

#TodayInQueerHistory July 2 (1999) The first Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk, also known as the Friendship Walk took place #OTD. It is recognised as the first Pride March in South Asia, with around 15 people taking part. This pride was a protest, coming from activists fighting to overturn Section 377.

#TodayInQueerHistory July 1 (1975) #OTD Barbara May Cameron (pictured) and Randy Burns co-found the Gay American Indian group, to better support the needs and challenges faced by queer Native Americans. The group later got involved in HIV/AIDS activism and advocating for Two Spirit people.
