What a timely historical photo given the bridge demolition this week!

Here's another Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway demolition update. I caught the crew ending their day just after 6 PM this evening.

Nice, the Flux Apartments building on Girard Ave and the Greenway is draining their pool directly into the pedestrian path.

The Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway is just rubble at this point. They work fast! Photos from around 1 PM today.

I missed it from this summer, but it looks like in addition to a new Nicollet Ave bridge, the city approved new bridges at Pillsbury and 10th Aves for 2026, and Grand and 18th Aves in 2027. Lots of greenway closures coming up (but new safe bridges too) 😩

More from today's initial light rail vehicle roll down the Southwest LRT route. Construction began in 2018 and Metro Transit says passengers will ride in 2027. Over the Kenilworth Channel, leaving W Lake St Station, arriving at W 21st St Station, exiting the Kenilworth tunnel.

Demolition of the Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway began today.

Midtown Greenway closure between 5th and Bryant has begun on schedule today, for Nicollet Ave bridge demolition. Please be careful on the detour, especially cycling westbound. (If you can use the stairs at Stevens, it's only closed between Bryant and Stevens!)

Today was the final day of the Midtown Greenway being open with the old Nicollet Ave Bridge in place. The path is going to be removed and replaced with a new one at 1st Ave next year after the new Nicollet Ave bridge is almost complete. Demolition starts tomorrow.

I saw Tron: Ares this evening, it was really fun, a bit different, and took the universe to a new place. I picked up on a ton of references (helped by the fact that I watched the other movies this past weekend), but thought they explained the past for new viewers too. 8/10!

With postings that the Greenway is closed starting October 14, it seems that the Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway is on its last week of life. Major progress in removal of the surrounding dirt.

I'm heading to Chicago on the Borealis today. The Empire Builder was running late so I got to see both trains at Saint Paul Union Depot at the same time! The Borealis departed first.

That big bump on the west side of the Wave Bridge that connects Bryant Ave S to the Lorning Greenway was removed and fixed! The bushes are cut back too. Don't worry, the framed painting of a pheasant is still there.

I crashed on my bike yesterday. I'm okay, but have some abrasions I'll be caring for over the next couple weeks. With September starting and cooler temperatures coming in as well, this really feels like a shift into a new season. I'll take things slow this week!

Happy birthday Midtown Greenway, one of the best features of Minneapolis! Bill’s piece is a great overview of how we got this greenway, how it’s unique, and where we can hope it’ll expand to in the future.

I went out exploring some of the progress on the Green Line extension this evening. I zig-zagged around to look at W Lake St station and 21st St station. The Kenilworth Trail has some pavement down in places, but is most definitely not open at all.

Uptown Porchfest this afternoon was delightful!

Hennepin County’s proposed layout for Lyndale Avenue S. falls short. It’s not a people-first design. It’s a decorated, street-level parking lot, dusted with the occasional confetti of mode shift virtue signals. No protected bikeways, 24/7 bus lanes, or green space throughout the entire corridor.

I finally did it, I rage wrote an article I hope to publish on Streets.mn! Lyndale Avenue should not have a shared use path, but a full seperated bike path and sidewalk to serpeate the low and medium speed users of the street.

The breakdown by age is fascinating. The younger you are, the larger Uptown is!

This is a very good episode covering the private encroachment of Cedar Lake, and how the Park Board has done nothing to stop it and improve access to the public land that spans all the way around the lake.

Yesterday was a new bike day for me! I'll be calling this Colonel Mustard, it's a fun All-City Super Professional set up as a single speed, some wider tires, and with a front basket. It'll be a great fair weather commuter bike. (Yes it's my second Super Pro, it's a great bike!)

Due to the air quality alert, we have moved the picnic Saturday to 1200 Nicollet Mall. There is an indoor party room that we have reserved, as well as outdoor courtyard and grills. Same time, same good people, same fun!

On Friday, some friends and I took the Northstar and Northstar Link to St. Cloud, went to a restaurant and other night life, then stayed the night in a hotel, and took the Amtrak Empire Builder home the next morning. The Amtrak train was 3 hours late, which was perfect so we could sleep in!
