It matters because this erasure of trans people happens in the most violent, least transparent, and most restricted of places. It ripples out to show how trans people are not counted in the free world. They are only revealed when they are dangerous. When they are vulnerable, they are erased.

It stuck with me because the prosecutor on the case I reported on at the time could not even say that this was a murder of a trans woman. Their bodies do not even count.

The California prison system does not "count" trans people in their facilities, so, for example, the murder of a trans woman in a men's prison (by her cellmate) was never considered "violence against women." Thus, we do not even know how common this is, but my sense was, very.

Talking to women who have endured sexual violence, abuse, substance abuse and recovery, and multiple arrests/ incarceration, their PTSD is rarely recognized and almost never allowed in court to reduce lengthy sentences.
