I think a lot of us get hope wrong. Hope, I do not believe, is an emotion. In fact, hope makes space for lots of emotions to exist alongside it. You can DO hope scared, angry, sad etc... Hope doesn't find us. We make hope through action and struggle. It's a practice of living and is re-made daily.

Reminded of Nero and the Olympics of 67 AD.

In my early teens, my dad gave me permission to read anything from his collection (very extensive sci-fi, plus a range of nonfiction and academic books). By late high school, he valued my opinion on what I read and automatically passed along fantasy novels he received.

Just finished a rewatch of Kaos and sad all over again that it didn't get a second season. I would love to have something, anything to continue the story!

This is literally exhibit A for why queer joy is so profoundly subversive. Anger is important too. But joy -- "smiling and talking and crying and laughing" -- that's what the fascists want to stamp out. That's the real challenge to their reign.

My wife just finished All the Birds in the Sky and immediately grabbed the other Anders on our bookshelf (The City in the Middle of the Night, which I somehow haven't read yet). Can't wait for this one or the teaser for the Birds sequel!

I remember hearing that if preventive measures worked as intended, they would seem like an over-reaction in retrospect. Clearly we did not reach that level, even in states with more restrictions, and yet we still get assertions like this.
