Actually I'm not done. Many people who shy away from discomfort in fiction are the ones who most need to learn to sit with it. The ones who call their friends sharing their troubles "trauma dumping" or distance themselves when a family member is sad or lash out when their biases are confronted.

Fiction can help you experience these uncomfortable emotions in a made-up environment and improve your emotional intelligence. Then when real life experiences and relationships test that emotional intelligence, you're less likely to fail. Running away from it just trains you to keep running.

I'm gonna say something that might get me canceled. Trans people have an 18% unemployment rate, 4x the national average. We get paid 60% of what cis people get. The Federal government/MOST state governments strip our rights/hunt us. The only cis people that can commiserate with us are immigrants.
