Did you know? The breakfast cereal industry is directly responsible for the popularity of anime in the United States

While anime was slowly amassing a cult following for a while before then, the first anime to get "popular" outside of the ol' Speed Racer and Voltron was Sailor Moon, which initially underperformed in syndication but became a hit on Toonami in 1998.

While they had been airing "classic" anime before then, the success of Sailor Moon paved the way for Toonami to go full steam ahead on anime, starting with the one and only Dragon Ball Z that fall, and transforming them into an after school juggernaut and the premier home for anime in the US.

Fun fact: Shortly before they picked up DBZ, Toonami aired Beast Wars for one week only as part of a sweepstakes promotion. Between this and later picking up Reboot, there's a non-zero chance Beast Wars would have been Toonami's fall 1998 show if it weren't for Sailor Moon's success.

Why is this important? Because Toonami got Sailor Moon, the show that kicked off their anime phase and put them on the map, from a company known as the Program Exchange. FOR FREE. And the Program Exchange was a direct partnership with General Mills. The cereal company.

How the Program Exchange worked is that they would provide stations with certain "programs" for free in "exchange" for airing ads for General Mills products. This included the traditional cereals

Cartoon Network had worked with the Program Exchange several times in the past. It started with Garfield and Friends in 1995, expanding to Rocky and Bullwinkle and Underdog in 1996, and a brief run of Woody Woodpecker in 1997. I mean, why not? Free cartoons!

After its initial syndicated run flopped, The Program Exchange picked up DiC's dub of Sailor Moon, distributing it from 1997 to 2004. And it's from the Program Exchange that Toonami picked up the show, truly kicking off the anime boom of the 90s- without having to spend so much as a dime.

So the next time you go to your nearest anime convention or buy a manga from your local bookstore, don't forget to thank Sonny the goddamn Cocoa Puffs bird for making it all possible.

I feel like I should post this - here's the infamous Home Improvement promo from the Dana Carvey Show documentary, as it was actually broadcast (so no cutaways to Colbert or Carell.) You'll notice a few differences as far as graphics go. 🧵

When they went to put the promo in the documentary, they didn't pluck it off the internet, but recreated it visually with higher quality source material and recreated graphics. The "all new epsiode!" typo was introduced in the recreation; the actual ABC promo does not have that misspelling.

Finally, support the original uploaders of this stuff. This particular copy was sourced from tvandmoviearchive, but there are versions floating around that were uploaded earlier. I fully believe that if that promo were NOT on YouTube, that legendary part of the documentary would not have existed.
