We did have a small stack of Little Golden Books. I loved The Pokey Little Puppy and The Monster at the End of This Book. My sister always wanted Cinderella. (Mom read to us every night.) And: *I* owned three. I still have them. They all have the same handwriting in the front. ;)

Incidentally, this is also why I was not allowed to buy books as a child. Seems out of left field, I know. But: my father would not allow money to be spent on anything one could get for free. We used libraries. We read and were read to. But we didn’t own books. Because socialism.

My father served twenty-seven years. Retired with the highest rank available to him as someone without a college degree. Why? Because he grew up poor and then had children to provide for. It’s a poor man’s army* and has long been. This video nails that and more. *Air Force for my dad, but still.

Twenty-six years ago today, Kristi, Shawn, Sydney, Joseph, Cassandra, Susan, and Justin lost their lives before the shooter who killed them took his own. I wasn’t there. But I could’ve been. And friends were. It’s been a hard week, y’all. Oh, and fuck guns.
