Oversight of immigration detention, especially medical care, urgently needs reform. When human beings are in the government’s custody, we are responsible for them.

The officer who shot Alex worked for DHS for 8 years. The officer who shot Renee worked for DHS for over 10 years. Both are considered “highly trained.” The problem isn’t "training." DHS was built to violate our rights and has been empowered to act with impunity. We must MELT ICE and dismantle DHS.

Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Chicago is an abuse of power that undermines our democracy. I joined @durbin.senate.gov, @duckworth.senate.gov, and Democratic members of the IL delegation to demand Trump immediately rescind his order to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago.

If the National Governors Association chooses to remain silent, Illinois will have no choice but to withdraw from the organization. We should be standing as one against the idea that Donald Trump can call up the National Guard against our will.

Unlike Donald Trump, most Americans believe in the ideals on which our nation was founded. Now is the time to stand up for those noble ideals. Be loud — for America.
