This morning, my colleagues and I stood on the House steps, ready to negotiate a bipartisan funding agreement that prevents health care premiums from skyrocketing. House Republicans are still nowhere to be found.

Instead of being in D.C. to fund the government, House Republicans are on vacation. That is a dereliction of their duties as representatives of the American people. The House must stop playing political games and get back to work so we can avoid a shutdown.

In less than 10 hours, the U.S. government will shut down, and Mike Johnson’s to do list will almost be complete. Rather than negotiate with Democrats on a bipartisan bill, Republicans would rather take healthcare away from 5 million Americans.

Just as the Trump Administration is ramping up immigration raids in Chicago… the Supreme Court’s conservative majority greenlights racial profiling during ICE arrests. Justice Sotomayor said it well in her dissent: “This is unconscionably irreconcilable with our Nation’s constitutional guarantees.”

When a president threatens war on an American city, it is an attack on democracy. This is not strength. It is fear, weaponized against Black, Brown, and immigrant communities instead of doing the work to keep people safe. IL Democrats reject Trump’s threats and will not let intimidation rule.

The court ruling is simple: sending the National Guard to Los Angeles—and possibly Chicago—is illegal. This isn’t about safety; it’s an authoritarian power grab. I stood with colleagues and the ACLU to make it clear that we will not stand for this.
