While we were in Italy my wife kept remarking on all the small vehicles, both personal and commercial. One thing I stressed was that it's not that people in Italy necessarily like or want small cars, but rather smaller vehicles are the result of a deliberate set of policy and design choices.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it? If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say? Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

You’re much closer to becoming disabled or homeless than you are to becoming rich and wealthy. It’s not a moral failing. It’s not something you can “try harder” your way out of. We need robust social supports & safety nets to ensure everyone is properly cared for.

Almost every developer I work with does not like building suburban houses. It's a long ROI thus, they're not great for business. We all feel the housing affordability crisis. But for some reason, many municipalities refuse to change their ways to allow smaller, safer streets and affordable housing

The number of times I snapped my fingers and said 'hell-yeah' in this video was all of the video 😅 Jas and Pat nail it again! Stop signs and speed limits are regularly ignored by drivers. Bike whatever way you feel safe. The only way to have safer streets is to design for traffic calming.

People should be unhappy that the city's design forces everyone to drive lest they sacrifice their time. It need not be this way. We can provide 100km of safe all ages paths for cycling, scooting, etc without much effort or money. We deserve a people-first city #stjohns I can help with that

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

IMO Toronto needs like half the Streets it has downtown. I spent a full day confidently biking all over Montreal but I'm far more skeptical of biking in Toronto. So many assholes clearly speeding in cars everywhere. Also every tram should be in a dedicated lane and have signal priority.

Next, water Street? #yyt Streets aren't noisy. Cars are noisy. Nothing ruins a pedestrian area like a loud engine showing off to no-one who cares just outside. The more pedestrian areas the better.

I landed in Montreal. In less than 40 minutes without any deep knowledge of the system, I managed to get a day transit OPUS pass, hop on the express airport bus from YUL, get on a subway and walk to a specific store, just from the wayfinding maps. Reliable frequent transit is a game changer 😁

Then there's the cost of cars. 500 new cars cost as much as 1km of light rail with a train when we simply remove car space instead of trying to appease cars. That sounds insane but that's what many European cities can build it for, when the priority is moving people. 5000 cars is 1 km of subway.

"I think I'll take the bus to the regatta here in #stjohns on this beautiful day 😊. Well that doesn't seem like an efficient route." This is why people drive. People will travel however is easiest. We need a city that actually values real choice in mobility. Until then, driving will win.

Even in NL it's 10 hours end to end either way. It is a hateful drive whether CSJ to PaB, La Poille to St. Anthony, or Lab City to L'Anse au loup. Most NL towns are small enough to ebike around in 15 min or less. Many could have transit for a low cost. 1 bus per 5,000 ppl can work as a start.

We have a few of these in #stjohns but we need far more. Drivers cutting in front of pedestrians who have the walk symbol is dangerous and illegal but we see it far too often. I've been cut off by drivers but also have had a horn blown at me when I've properly yielded for a pedestrian.

Many people might not understand the insanity of a city forcing developers to build on street parking on roads where cars cannot fit between driveways on the street. It is a road twice as wide as it needs to be for literally no reason. That has a cost.
