The TTC Board seems to have stymied Bradford's platform doors motion from last month at council. Instead of developing a 10 year funded plan, we will be developing a 10 year *costed* plan - which is essentially what we have now...an unfunded plan...

50m per station for screen doors isn't even so bad that it wouldn't make sense to do the two busiest / narrowest platform stations left per year. We spend more on less valuable things.

These new steel barriers are a step in the right direction, but they cannot substitute the safety and reliability benefits of real platform edge doors. Back in October, City Councillors voted to defer a plan to install platform edge doors at TMU station due to costs and insufficient funding.

This reminded us that you can in fact do platform fences, that are also platform doors...the Disney Monorail (and essentially all theme parks use this design)...Toronto can't even do this...they usually cost $5000-$10000 per gate...

The TTC needs to pick better peers. Using the NY MTA as a model is BAD - they are among the world leaders in costs, & partial barriers & AI detection are not going to stop people trespassing or doing self-harm from getting on the track. Can we make healthier choices and look up to Paris instead?

Toronto’s transit cost disease has hit… metal fences. Just a reminder that $2M CAD is about the cost of half height PSGs for one platform in Hong Kong. Then we use NYC to justify our wild cost estimates for actual screen doors. The incuriosity and Anglo echo-chamber here is astounding.

so uhh..I'd much rather those $20 million be thrown to installing real and effective PEDs, not fences. if our costs were normal, they'd fund TMU and a couple stations. if our costs were bad it'd fund just TMU. still a good proof of concept. but we're not "affording" even a single station, are we?

Just for context the city of Toronto spent 130m$ for temporary seating at BMO field for FIFA…20m$/game…but can’t spend 50m$/station (inflated estimate) for permanent platform doors that will benefit 1m people a day forever….

We have a platform door report coming to council! Here are our thoughts…. 1) we have a priority list! 2) we are going to install fences, not doors at 10 stations, total cost 20m$!!! 3) TMU and Bloor are proceeding with doors, 6m$ to get to 60% design

Platform doors and washrooms? Yes, these are good. High ceilings? This is silly and just adds cost. Commuter lots? This is actively bad. We need housing near transit, not car storage. The solution to getting people out of cars is not making more room for cars.

TTC’s Easier Access project will be finished within two years or less. The next EA-style program for them on subways could be PSDs (and corresponding CBTC on Lines 2 and then 4 when extended). And on streetcars, a program of switch upgrades.

In Istanbul, all the new metro lines have platform doors. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard, at least for new lines.

Hahahahahaha. We compared to the transit agency with the worst costs on the planet and found that our numbers were in the same ballpark so it's ok.

MTA doesn't have any platform doors...and frankly we shouldn't be looking to the most expensive systems in the world for cost comparisons...France, Japan and South Korea are better examples...should be closer to 5m$/station...

The city says platform doors will be expensive because we will need to rebuild the crumbling platforms. Guess what - we are going to have to rebuild them anyways… Maybe we should get working on it before the wood rots completely…

The TTC has cancelled the meeting of the strategic planning committee for this month. We were hoping to get an update on platform doors and more information on budgeting for them.

Transport Canada should legislate this country wide...or withhold money from provinces that don't mandate it (if they can't due to constitutional issues)...

The 510 Spadina car recently had some transit signal priority changes allowing streetcars to precede left turns at three locations. The results were not impressive and more work is needed to speed service on this key route. stevemunro.ca/2026/04/06/t... (1/2)

As best I can tell, they only changed the order of the phases at the three intersections on Spadina. Which I think would be consistent with no improvement.

Alright Vancouver and Montreal friends…what do we need to know about the state of platform doors in your city? Have there been any reports? Links to stats? Votes? Which politicians support them and which don’t? Toronto is moving forward, but the more the merrier!

In no small part due to these gates, it's never had a guest fatality in over 50 years of operation. (And for platforms with a "wall of columns", which some transit systems have a lot of, retrofitting these gates would be very easy.)

The question is not how do we afford to build platform doors. The question is how do we afford to not build platform doors….once you understand the significant and increasing costs of the status quo the solution is very obvious…

Here is the motion on platform doors. We fully support this, and believe that getting construction started within a year is doable. The challenge here is that the budget process won’t be complete until February 2027. Which means they will have very little time to ramp this up.

From the looks of this, most of this money is going to accessibility and signage improvements. Very unlikely that any of that will lead to faster or more reliable commutes for the vast majority of customers. We need to be spending money reducing delays and increasing safety to do that.

One of the nice things about getting platform doors done on the Skytrain in Vancouver is that because the stations are so much smaller, it would cost way less than in Toronto. Some of these stations are busy…surprised they haven’t done it to simplify the automation!
