I found this interesting, because here in Montreal two underground REM stations in particular (McGill, Édouard Montpetit) have pretty incredible sound absorption + platform screen doors, making even reasonably crowded platforms very quiet. /cc @ianvisits.co.uk www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/pad...

The best thing is you and I know that they know that their GIDS system isn’t going to catch this…that’s why they added the yellow plastic bollards…the sensors that they are using in place of platform doors can’t and won’t work here…so they bodged it with these things…

Unfortunately this likely means we will have more priority ones in Toronto. The inability for the finch and Eglinton to implement both modern transit priority and modern safety systems to prevent track access is incredibly frustrating and will result in an increased number of deaths and injuries.

Yellow lines are an anachronism in many parts of the world as well. When there are platform doors, the yellow line no longer is needed…

If you don't count Honolulu Montreal is first, Toronto likely second.

This is at least 5 stations worth of platform doors that could have been installed. There are a lot more folks dying on the subway than cyclists on the roads. The 5 riskiest stations represents 61 deaths over 10 years, or about 6 deaths a year. Vision Zero for subways should be a thing.

Reminder we are currently spending 0$ on platform doors for the subway. Despite there being a lot more deaths of ttc riders than cyclists every year. We love cyclists, but this project indicates we can and should be spending a lot more on platform doors.

The North American big city subway platform doors armrace is just starting. Which city will be the first to build a major line extension with doors? Who will get a complete line doorified first? Who cares about the safety of their users the most? Should CEO bonus be based on number of system deaths?

This is the way to render new subway vehicles...safe by default...artists should always include platform doors in their renders to ensure that they are not promoting unsafe operating standards...

This again is something that could be fixed by better regulating the railways as public utilities, by establishing clear and reasonable standards about design and works for grade-separations to avoid extraction by CN and CP. But nobody cares at Transport Canada and these issues are just forgotten.

Marco on grade separation…then he gets into transport Canada should regulate the railways to make it happen…seems reasonable. While they are at it they could require platform doors once a station has certain ridership or risk profiles…like a safety org should…

We send our condolences to this victim of TTC neglect and indifference, this is in @chrismoise.ca ward. We strongly encourage everyone to ask how one of the busiest stations in the system hasn’t gotten and DCs allocated to it to build platform doors. Delaying further will lead to more of these…

This is a helpful reminder that transit safety is constantly changing for the better. North America has a lot of legacy practices that should be retired and made safe with modern technology. Seems pretty basic, we do it with buildings, with vehicles, with roads and basically every other industry.

Platform doors would make this station a lot safer…

Jason is right…this is the way to go…the busiest stations can easily self fund within 6-20 years (with a 10 cent surcharge at the station), and the rest can be funded from captured savings. These are also the stations with the biggest wins for customers.

If the TTC implemented a temporary 10 cent safety surcharge to build platform doors, the busiest 5 stations would be paid off in under 10 years. And the next 5 in under 20 years. This is with no additional funding. Since they are the busiest stations, they would also have the biggest impact.
