My partner has cancer. Of all things to worry about, financial worries, especially income and medical, are maddening when you know there are tools for that not being used, a livable UBI and universal healthcare. I’m one of the people whose insurance is at risk in the shutdown fight. Ugh. 1/x

Anyone who thinks AI will run it's course I think is in a pipe dream. Big business doesn't give a rats ass and continue to utilize it to reduce their paid work force. It's going to impact everything from accounting, banks etc..add in robotics developing at a crazy pace , it's why we need UBI now .

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

Long before the pandemic era guaranteed basic income pilots began, we already knew unconditional income worked based on decades of evidence, but that doesn't stop today's wonks from picking out a few 1-3 year studies, uplifting them above all others, and leaving out some very important details.

A NEW study of the Finland basic income experiment just dropped. Turns out psychotropic drug use decreased by 8 %–11 %, and incomes increased on average by 9% to 11% due to people not losing the income when they accepted a job, unlike traditional unemployment.

Virtually all articles critical of universal basic income that are based on some guaranteed income pilot result neglect to mention the results of any 'saturation site' pilots that actually make a point of testing universal distribution. UBI is universal, and universality tests never fail to impress.

We have lots of long-term evidence about the impacts of unconditional income that go back as far as the Mothers Pension program where we learned decades later of the positive impacts it had on their kids. Interestingly, we even had a 20-year group of recipients in the 1970s that ended after 9 years.

I have a weird superpower that I used with my kids when they were little; doing cartoon voices. After shelling out $ for a Disney product one birthday, I did the “Greed is Good” monologue from Wall Street in Mickey’s voice. You hear it in your mind right now… makes more sense now more than ever.

Universal basic income would better enable parents to choose a job or unpaid care work at home. If you can't afford to pay for care and so quit your job to do unpaid care work at home, that's not a choice. And if you want to do unpaid care but can't afford to lose income, that's not a choice either.

Universal Basic Income would improve mental health, reduce homelessness, reduce crime, and reduce drug and alcohol abuse. I'm not saying it would 100% fix all of these, but that it would significantly help with all of them as just one policy. UBI and universal healthcare are musts for our wellbeing.

I think the most key point Stephen makes here is the preventive reality of UBI. The biggest impacts of cash appears to be when it comes to preventing or alleviating certain life circumstances. The reality of targeted programs and non-cash benefits is to miss those in need or only come after

This is why it's so goddamn frustrating every time someone claims that UBI is a bad idea because billionaires want it, as if that in any way reflected reality. WE WOULD HAVE IT ALREADY IF SO. They know it will mean more tax for them, and less power.
