Before the 1990s, plane crashes caused by microbursts used to kill planeloads of people fairly regularly. Dr. Ted Fujita and NCAR scientists figured out how to detect microbursts and warn pilots about them. Since then? Zero airliner crashes from microbursts.

These people are nuts. NCAR developed the GPS dropsonde, which revolutionized the understanding of TC structure, improved forecasts, and validated remote sensing platforms, as documented in over 400 peer-reviewed publications in the last 25 years. And that’s just one of NCAR’s countless advances.

NCAR does a whole lot more than just climate research, and I think calling it a climate research lab paints an incomplete picture. Atmospheric chemistry, severe thunderstorms, radar, software and tools, etc.

I was worried for my crew mates when I saw them circling in the eye for over 20 mins. Looks like the very rough ride was confirmed. Plane had to leave early. They reported svr turb and a "sawtooth" eye. Looks like they moved 600-700ft up & down during this stretch in ~1 min.

The last hurricane hunter flights into Melissa have departed before its landfall in Jamaica. As always kudos to them for their work powering through especially powerful storms like this to collect invaluable data.

At first glance this is very, very good news for NASA and other agencies. I think that many missions zeroed out by the White House decree are reversed here. Still a long way to go but this is an excellent sign. I'm sure many others will chime in on this.

A comparison of what we see from geostationary infrared imagery vs. what we get when passive microwave imagery like what SSMIS provides is available. This is Hurricane Otis in 2023 as it was gearing up for extremely rapid intensification prior to impacting Acapulco as a category 5 storm.

I'll believe it when I see it, but haggling over prior auths is one of the worst parts of our healthcare system. It can lead to unnecessary delays that waste so many staff hours from doctors, pharmacists, and patient advocates. Hope this doesn't result in more outright denials...
