The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Almost every reason people have for defunding or abolishing ICE is also a reason to defund or abolish the police, yet many people who are rightly calling for action against ICE would never come close to doing to the same for police. But this fight goes beyond just ICE. ICE represents a larger issue.

When you help make it so the only names people know are Pretti and Good, you reinforce the culture that says these things aren't "bad enough" until white people get involved. This has been going on for a whole year. Many non-white people have died in this same way trying to protect their neighbors.

Phase 3 is complaing about both a) the rising costs of incarceration an additional 10M+ people, and b) the lack of manual agricultural labor now that undocumented immigrants have been expelled from the US. The answer to both will be "prison labor on a scale not seen since US chattel slavery."

For folks still struggling with the math: There are ~345 million US citizens. There are ~245 million white US citizens. This is what they mean by "Peaceful ethnic cleansing." Their plan ends with deporting all non-white people. Not "undocumented criminals." Not even "all undocumented people."

Look, it's okay to be anti-AI for ideological reasons. And in my case, I remain anti-AI for creative pursuits like art and writing, no matter how more "productive" it may be. And I remain anti-AI in medicine and law due to the high stakes. But let's not mix up ideology with the data on utility.

Also, this poll does a disservice by misleadingly framing the question IMO. Basically no one uses terminating assertions literally "always". That's actually more absurd than having no assertions at all. By framing the first choice as that, rather than as "by default", the poll skews its results.

I feel like folks find this to be a controversial or "bold" stance -- sharing it specifically to lower that perception Assertions should be terminating by default. It should be an exception to make them debug-build only. And this is in *no way* in conflict with being obsessed with performance.

We further *define* (b) to include any and all memory safety violations and undefined behavior.

The default is, throughout all of our C++ server code: a) It isn't an *invariant*, it is just an error, and it is propagated explicitly to the caller or b) It is an *invariant* and the state is corrupt if not valid. These, when checked, are terminating by default.

Just to be clear, because it won't be from this poll: All of Google's server C++ code uses terminating assertions by default. There are debug-build-only terminating assertions, and non-terminating assertion tools available of course, but they are not the default.
