This is because a fast player opens up the area of the pitch you can play the ball to him in - play it into space and he will run onto it. Wirtz needs it to feet, or closer at least, which nullifies the threat a wide man usually possesses of stretching the pitch or just doing the FB for pace.

If he was starting central with someone to the left of him it would solve a lot of that. You can't play it into space for him due to the lack of pace, forcing him to drift inside just to make himself an option, which congests the middle and leaves the left empty. You can't play wide with no pace.

Chiesa was brilliant against Southampton. Perhaps two games in a week would have been a bit much for him to start, but I'd definitely tap into his form and mood and bring him on for the second half.

If only we had a player whose game is all about penetrative creativity in central areas but who would struggle out wide in the quickest league in the world due to a lack of pace.

I imagine the issue with Konate signing is that he wants to be paid like a top-class CB, while Slot and the nerds think he has too many shockers to warrant that price bracket. For me Guehi is already a better player.

The point here is that you can improve your defensive record by improving your attacking and getting clear in games before the defence is really tested. Our defence is constantly under duress.

Really good sides make their defences look better than they are by getting 3 and 4 nil up so that opponents stop playing. At the moment the attack isn't ever giving the defence that breathing space.

Gravenberch brilliant. Gakpo and Bradley both frustrating. They are the weak links in the Liverpool side for me.
