I didn't know Charlie Kirk existed until the early 2020s, when I learned about him and Turning Point USA while researching U.S. protest activity for my old job. From what I saw over the next several years, I came to detest him, and to see him as an important figure in the ascending American right.

I think the problem with rallying around the most privileged when they've been targeted is that it never trickles down. they're touted as examples for "all of us" but it's not actually true.

It really says something that the right has been running this "send a bigoted speaker to a college campus and watch what happens teehee" play for decades now, and the "debate is the highest good" wing of American liberalism is still blithely playing along.

Two things to add to this: 1) I am much more concerned with party elites and leaders encouraging and stoking violence than shifts in the public from vaguely worded questions. 2) These public shifts in support for violence are almost always downstream of elite rhetoric and narratives.

I'd guess the change among Dems is mostly driven by strong anti-capitalist sentiment among young progs and lefties, not elders' change.

Occurs to me that Trump's entire regime consolidation strategy is to persuade everyone through displays of force that the regime is already consolidated and there's no point in resisting. Which I don't think will work, but also shows how important public acts of noncompliance are.

Wild to me that we're over a year out from the 2026 elections and so many people are already declaring that we must accept and vote for candidates who support things we abhor. The next year is exactly when we have the most leverage to change that. If not now, when?
