When you make ceramics, you have to accept the fact that you'll lose some pieces in the kiln. The kiln gods request their sacrifices. Sometimes, the happenstance makes it cool... This wiggle, meditating in full lotus, popped while bisque firing. She broke into dozens of pieces.

There she is! I finally got a chance to meet the 1700 Cascadia tsunami sand layer in person (along with several older tsunami layers). Felt a bit like meeting a celebrity, or maybe a god... a thrilling and chilling reminder of what came before and what will, inevitably, come for us again.

I'd give lino prints + patches away for free. I'd make art for local organizations for free. I'd make large, weird paintings more often... and give them to people or cool orgs. More sculpture, more collage, more more more. SO much of my time is spend doing admin work or producing merch to sell.

I second ALL of this I always complained “there’s NOTHING here” There usually IS I just wasn’t looking Now I’m involved and it does a lot for that part of my brain that feels hopeless

In only one year, Echo and I have gone from absolutely 0 community interaction to volunteering with climate groups, attending (and joining!) citizen committees, making public comment at county and state level, and participating in local Pride event planning. We showed up ONCE and now we're here.

"Runic Cervid Bowl" 🦌 One of my favorite early ceramics we made... @echomary.bsky.social threw the vessel and marked its rim with the molars of a deer. Then we glazed it with sunspot raku glazes to get the metallic reduction. The deep crevices contain spots of rainbow--it's absolutely magical.

We barely do anything but chill on the land, make art, and volunteer in the community. We want time to make things, not money to spend. It's lean and unpredictable. We almost never eat restaurants/takeout, we try to only buy thrift/clearance, and weigh EVERY purchase based on need vs want.

Echo takes a pic of this exotic terrain on highway 101 every time we pass it. We have basalt at home! But this is the ✨special✨ basalt.

Next in the deep dive of 'Sylvan Song' is the creation the beetles. I use Paperclay in a lot of my pieces, a material I discovered in my 20s. It's very light when it dries. My beetles are stream-of-consciousness. I start with a rough oval blank and just keep adding bits and bobs until I'm satisfied.
