Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats. After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

I’ve spoken to more than a dozen staffers at land management agencies this week about how devastating the federal firings will be to the lands we all love. It’s been an important reminder of how much these ppl do behind the scenes and the sacrifices they continue to make on our behalf.

Headed to the Bay last night for a few days rest from covering the fires in LA. But as the enormous plumes of smoke fell farther into the distance the enormity of the past week started to sink in. It’s hard to stop my mind from swirling with worry, with grief, with the feeling like I should do more.

This is a dangerous and closed-minded view of journalism. There are never two sides to a story—there are multitudes. Our job is to deliver context, expert analysis and facts so readers have enough insight to make up their own minds. Dumbing down info and rating it leaves little room for nuance.

I love the Internet because you’ll be like five reels deep in some algorithmic black hole of electro-house music set to pictures of crabs in outerspace and they’ll still hit you with a loud ad that’s like —HERE’S HOW I TURNED MY OLD UGLY FACE INTO AN UNRECOGNIZABLE GOO!

A couple of follow-ups re: today's California #quakes: 1) There was actually only one significant quake as of 1pm PT--the M7.0 SW of Eureka. The far northern Sonoma County quake was actually ~M4.1 but initially registered higher due to conflicting data. [1/3]
