A nursing mother was separated from her baby, who is allergic to formula and was struggling to keep on weight without access to her mom's breastmilk. A mom of two was taken away from her 9 and 16yo - the former couldn't sleep, the latter considered dropping out of school.

We reviewed more than a dozen cases, and interviewed multiple parents and children who had been separated by detention or deportation. In each case, a sudden arrest or deportation of a parent had radically disrupted the trajectory of a child’s life...

We used data extracted from I-213 forms, which immigration agents fill each time they arrest someone alleging they are in the country without authorization. These numbers are likely an underestimate bc agents don't always ask about kids. And parents sometimes don't disclose they have kids.

wow i can't believe that journalism won a pulitzer prize

This is an incredible story, but it also raises an issue I have with the Wall Street Journal. The journalism is top notch, absolutely among the best in the biz, but the company itself is so frustrating. They have an ad for polymarket right on the homepage
