Comic writer Gail Simone coined fridging to describe a trend in comics where established female characters were treated as disposable to serve male characters' stories. That is not the same thing as the plot leading to a character dying, or even a character dying as an inciting incident.

Let me try to illustrate the point with one of Gail Simone's own comics vs someone else Unbreakable X-Men starts with Rogue dying, and Gambit's grief is a huge focal point. The story is ABOUT grief, and to tell that story someone's gotta die. It's also a what if, so it doesn't impact mainline Rogue
