A coppice Oak, a ‘phoenix’ Holly and two Cherry Galls from Tees Bank Wood upstream of Barnard Castle yesterday. A lovely wood well worth exploring!

Brilliant day at South Gare today… wasn’t the case sadly. And only about an hour. Scenery etc was up to scratch tho, as was weather, with heavy showers!

Decided to retire the moth traps for this year (probably). First trap 9/3, last 9/11 37 nights (we were away a lot of mid-summer), 15 NF🔲 (SE09) and 1NF🔲 (SE19), a fair more NFM and only Wogan was when I left all my outside lights on😂😂🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Need to find some leaf-mines now… (quickly😂) #teammoth

Can’t understand why I’m suddenly getting so many moths, 50+ last night for instance. My last two traps in May (I was away a lot of the summer) produced only 20+ each night (decent weather too). Btw I’m 200m up a hillside surrounded by pasture in the N Pennines. #teammoth (Not complaining) 😂

Over 50 moths this morning including 13 Yellow-line Quakers (my record). A late Snout was a surprise as were two more new for the 🔲, Mottled Umber and Acleris rhombana. #teammoth

A few hours at a grey and cold @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social yesterday. A few goldies, a few pinks, one reddy, one shely, and a cettis (golden plover, pink-footed geese, redwing and shelduck😂). Highlight of the day tho was a large flock (4/500) of fieldfare on the moors on the drive over.

A walk from Hartley to Kirkby Stephen and back along the old railway line yesterday. A good place for orchids earlier in the year but currently lots of fungi. A large ‘winter tit flock’ was lovely to see and hear. A few treecreepers too. Not sure about the petrified ‘wolf’ tho!

Awoke to a garden full of newly arrived blackbirds. Had a wander up to Cogden Gill as there’s a fair few rowans, and lo and behold, fieldfare, redwing and more blackbirds. Topped off with 3 mostly thrush over the house when I got back. Winter’s here! 😂

A garden full of newly arrived blackbirds also had 2 Mervs (getting common now😂), Dark arches, Feathered thorn, 3 SSDart, 7 Y-L Quakers, 6 autumnal, R-g carpet, Angle shades, Large wainscot (2nd for 🔲) and a Grey-shoulder knot (NF🔲). The latter both being new for me! #teammoth

13 Y-L Quakers in a busy trap last night. 4 Autumnal, 2 feathered thorn, a dark sword-grass, a red sword-grass, and a couple of SSDarts. In addition to above (some of which are pictured below), a Lunar Underwing (NF🔲 if correct),a chestnut, a Spruce carpet, Blair’s shoulder-knot (NF🔲 if correct).

Only 2 in the trap on Saturday but night before was better. Another Merv and Chestnut, Y-LQ?, The Brick? (If so NF🔲) and a December moth. I caught 11 December moths on 6/11/24 so still plenty of reason to get the traps out!

Very interesting LNR nr Carperby. Lots of Spring sandwort still in flower with some thrift and Rock-rose also still out. Ground was carpeted in places with Thyme. Must come back in summer!
