Great to see almost 2000 plants for Nidderdale National Landscape leaving the habitat creation nursery at @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social Much of the material was collected in Nidderdale, bulked up in the nursery, and will be used to enhance a network of new upland ponds & scrapes.

A few hours at a grey and cold @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social yesterday. A few goldies, a few pinks, one reddy, one shely, and a cettis (golden plover, pink-footed geese, redwing and shelduck😂). Highlight of the day tho was a large flock (4/500) of fieldfare on the moors on the drive over.

Cladium mariscus grown in the habitat creation nursery at @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social being planted into some rather challenging clay, starting a new area of quarry restoration.

Analysis of quadrat data shows fen-meadow at Flasks Lake has +/- equal floristic similarities to 3 closely-related NVC plant communities (M22 Blunt-flowered Rush fen-meadow, M24a Hemp Agrimony subcommunity of Purple Moor-grass fen and S24 species-rich reedfen). V promising for such young habitat.

Planting of this marginal fen zone at the @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social reedbed began in February 2023. It's maturing well, showing that good quality wetland habitat can be established relatively quickly. Some management of reedmace is needed.

A good trapping session at Nosterfield NR last night. A bit influx of Scrobipalpa ocellatella with 51 trapped. Neocochylis hybridella new for VC65. Also new for the VC was Homoeosoma nebulella. @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social @jillwarwickno1.bsky.social

The fen-meadow at Flasks @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social provided a colourful backdrop for our wetland creation workshop today. This habitat has been established within the past 7 years on what were originally bare silt flats, using local-origin plant material.

The tussock fringe was only planted in October 2021, as a joint project with @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social. This shows that some fen plant communities can be established quite quickly under favourable conditions, using local-origin plants.

Fen-meadow at Flasks @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social with a colourful mixture of Yellow & Purple Loosestrifes, Greater Birdsfoot Trefoil, Marsh Thistle, Meadowsweet & Blunt-flowered Rush. This is becoming, increasingly, a self-organising plant community closely resembling semi-natural examples.

Nationally endangered Greater Water-parsnip was re-introduced to @teeswildlife.bsky.social Coatham Marsh in autumn 2023 using plants grown by @nosterfieldnr.bsky.social. Great to see this imposing wetland umbellifer looking v much at home today, w plenty of flowering plants. @teesbirds.bsky.social

High summer is prime time for wetland flowers, and the fen-meadow at Flasks is particularly colourful now. Insect favourites include Hemp Agrimony and Parsley Water-dropwort.
