Great to see almost 2000 plants for Nidderdale National Landscape leaving the habitat creation nursery at

Much of the material was collected in Nidderdale, bulked up in the nursery, and will be used to enhance a network of new upland ponds & scrapes.

A few hours at a grey and cold

yesterday. A few goldies, a few pinks, one reddy, one shely, and a cettis (golden plover, pink-footed geese, redwing and shelduck😂). Highlight of the day tho was a large flock (4/500) of fieldfare on the moors on the drive over.

Analysis of quadrat data shows fen-meadow at Flasks Lake has +/- equal floristic similarities to 3 closely-related NVC plant communities (M22 Blunt-flowered Rush fen-meadow, M24a Hemp Agrimony subcommunity of Purple Moor-grass fen and S24 species-rich reedfen). V promising for such young habitat.

Planting of this marginal fen zone at the

reedbed began in February 2023. It's maturing well, showing that good quality wetland habitat can be established relatively quickly. Some management of reedmace is needed.

provided a colourful backdrop for our wetland creation workshop today. This habitat has been established within the past 7 years on what were originally bare silt flats, using local-origin plant material.

High summer is prime time for wetland flowers, and the fen-meadow at Flasks is particularly colourful now. Insect favourites include Hemp Agrimony and Parsley Water-dropwort.
