I think there's this tendency in the Canadian discourse to assume that in any situation where another country is mad at Canada, it must be because Canadians did something wrong. Probably we need to most past that as the default assumption.

The Prestige Cartel is real. We also need to talk abt the hiring biases in Canadian Poli Sci depts. There is a tendency to assume Ivy League/US & Oxbridge grad job candidates are inherently “better” applicants, while those from amazing Canadian *programs* are cast onto the NO pile way too quickly.

In recent research with @qalbaugh.bsky.social, we use a survey experiment to explore how gender stereotypes shape voters' perceptions of transgender and nonbinary candidates' traits. The results are not the most encouraging, but you can read more here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

In recent work with @qalbaugh.bsky.social, we find that in 2019 and 2021 parties nominated LGBTQ2S+ candidates in districts they were over 16 percentage points less likely to win than straight cis candidates. About 2/3 of the gap is due to which parties and 1/3 is due to which districts.

And a small part of me worries that saying "Canadians are divided!" — at least unless it's justified — will actually promote unnecessary division.

I understand the appeal and potential relevance of claims that Canadians are deeply divided after this election, but I'd like to see evidence that goes deeper than the fact that different people — and different groups of people — voted for different parties.

From what I'm seeing in Europe, the real game changer here isn't really the Trump admin itself, but how quickly American elites - political, corporate, institutional and academic - just failed to respond and resist in any meaningful way. US prestige culture, as seen from abroad, just evaporated.

Frustrating to see market indicators used as sole or most important measures of effects of Trump's tariff war. It allows claiming of 'wins' from the vagaries of the stock market and normalizes this as economic policy. Whatever the economic indicators say.. 1/2

Why is any media outlet calling these "reciprocal tariffs"? Trump's premise that these countries apply tariffs in the first place is a product of his deranged imagination.

Everything Trump does makes the US a poorer, smaller and less influential world power in the long term. In the short term the only win I see is the attention he craves and the visuals his media ecosystem like. It’s discounting the future, but for less than nothing in the present.
