Great article on translation via the plagiarism algorithm, but especially this line: "An AI translation is fluff, it is slop and it is void." I need to put this on cards to hand out to Japanese publishing execs.

This, absolutely. So many people think that translation is "just replacing words", but there's so much more to it. A translator translates meaning, not just words. AI doesn't understand meaning, it only recognises words.

You wouldn’t translate a car’s ハンドル as “handle”. You wouldn’t translate a ハイタッチ as “high touch”. So why would you translate 「」 as “”? True facts: 99% of the time, you shouldn’t, and here’s why. Translation theory thread!🧵👇

In all my 18 years of living here, I have never seen so much snow in downtown Hiroshima City ❄️ It reminds of the nor’easters in Maryland that would swoop in and drop two or three feet of snow and cancel school for two weeks

Translator friends: Does anyone have any good resources for teaching newbie translators more about the importance of creative writing skills in general, and character voice in particular? And/or simple online courses they can take for this? I'm not a great teacher for this rn, so any help welcome! 🙏

I’m trying to collect a list for my college students of what working artists wish they had done and/or knew before post-grad or first year of really working as a freelancer or in-house artist If you feel like passing that on here I would love to see it and share with them later this year!

Today, I bought plates as a wedding gift for a dear friend. The shop owner knows me and not only gave me a discount for no reason, but also packed up all the plates so I could ship them. It’s nice to be reminded that kindness exists.

If you read a translated book, or poem, or anything, and the words move you or the prose excites you: remember the translator. Because those words are theirs. The original text is the plan. It lays out the structure and the goal, but the translator makes the choices that get you there.
