Benny Kubelsky was born OTD in 1894, eventually to become one of the century's foremost entertainers as Jack Benny. When he died in 1974 CBS preempted their evening programming for an hour-long tribute hosted by Charles Kuralt. He was 39.

Rod Serling's THE COMEDIAN aired on CBS' PLAYHOUSE 90 as a live drama OTD in 1957. Based on an Ernest Lehman novel, Mickey Rooney was Emmy-nominated as a comic bullying all in his life, especially his brother (Mel Tormé). Serling won the Emmy for his screenplay; his next would be for TWILIGHT ZONE.
