Decades ago, I was the fire alarm industry advisor to a UK fire service. We all worked hard to reduce alarms, because when people hear alarms that are not useful, they quickly learn to ignore them. Regular, useless alarm signals negate the usefulness of real alarms.

I’m not sure how hard it would be from a tech side but if they’re going to issue these in the middle of the night, they need to be more regional, and at least allow levels. I want to be woken up in an unsafe situation. I don’t want to wake up for this, I want to know in the am as I leave my house?

In my experience, once people have heard an alarm about 3 times, if those 3 were not useful. They start ignoring it. The way we use Amber Alerts (commonly with geographically low relevance) and the public alert system has probably already trained most people to not treat them as emergencies.

I would love if we could have a conversation about how Amber alerts are issued in Canada without a bunch of people saying that we hate children or something.

Anytime I criticize the Amber Alert system I always have people yell at me, usually parents, because a bunch of emotional arguments about how "WELL ANYTHING THAT CAN HELP SHOULD..." Stop. This system actually hurts children. It hurts everyone. I'm going to explain why.
