This is one of the most exciting pieces of science I have had the privilege to be involved in, led by @rui-xu.bsky.social‬, Bob Desimone, and Mark Richardson: the discovery of actual long-range monosynaptic connections in the human brain! For example the FFA connects to the rTPJ, how cool is that?

Two new facts stand out: 1. 85% of hallucinated citations in preprints are also in the subsequent journal version (thanks, peer review!) 2. Fake cites more likely to use the names of (male) scholars who are already highly cited, creating a fake-citation Matthew effect. arxiv.org/abs/2605.07723

Reviewing a paper, and it is so nice that the Metacheck R package we made allows me to download all OSF Files by just typing: metacheck::osf_file_download("2w123") (not the actual repo). All files are downloaded, maintaining the folder structure, without any hassle.

Sadly, not an April Fool & also not surprising. “An analysis conducted by @nature.com in collaboration with Grounded AI suggests that at least tens of thousands of 2025 publications, including journal papers, books, & conference proceedings, probably contain invalid references generated by AI.” 🧪

SCORE, a collaboration of 865 researchers, is now released as three papers in Nature, six preprints, and a lot of data (cos.io/score/). SCORE examined repeatability of findings from the social-behavioral sciences and tested whether human and automated methods could predict replicability.
