I have been mentoring a refugee family from Afghanistan for about 5 months. I have learned a lot about myself, administrative burden, the immigrant experience, and America. As an "education person", seeing American school communications thru their eyes is wild.

Check out my latest on legacy admissions. A lot of colleges, including many publics, do it. Also surprised to learn many public flagships offer scholarships to legacies. They should stop, but getting rid of these practices probably won't have huge effects on access or diversity.

This is not to let the Harvards and Princetons of the world off the hook. A small set of colleges have huge endowments and could enroll many more lower-income students. And they should! But most colleges depend on tuition to make their budget and financial aid budgets already fall short of need.

Would be great if selective colleges enroll more lower-income students using class-based affirmative action program. But to maintain diversity, it would need to be a big program. And would need to provide much more financial aid! They already don't meet all their students' financial need.

New Report! Affirmative action was mostly used by highly selective colleges, so that is where we are likely to see declines in racial diversity following SFFA But most colleges did not practice AA prior to the decision: we est<15% of 4-yr URM students were enrolled at institutions that used AA
