in terms of the anime, really solid first episode - was a bit concerned on how they'd handle the imagery/vision of rakugo but so far i think it's a solid translation

Ironically, the more overtly crazy opening has a more austere, well-balanced look to it

The bad? That excess is tiresome, sometimes tacky. The economy of character art detail & shading feels off, sometimes overdoing it to its detriment. Inelegantly heavy guidance to the eye, both SFX and camera effects being too heavy, bit too much speedlines... Just chill a bit, man

The more mechanical aspects of the animation can be impressive in a meaningful way too, like her being this damn good at imitating her dad

That exam performance is particularly great. It initially makes his character animation stiff, only showing humanity through short cuts of nervous tics, until a mood shift allows him to let loose. After that, his movements aren't only more articulate & higher in drawing count but palpably Confident

The good is... well, it's Akanebanashi which rules, for starters. But aspects of the anime can elevate it! It's a story about the ability to project a story & imagery from within to the outside, and the anime storyboards are already expanding regular panel transitions into more involved sequences

The Akanabanashi anime is so far defined by Excess, which has its downsides (especially in an art-based series where that's sometimes a topic of discussion!) but also deliberate upside. Leading up to an all-important performance with first person BG animation? Now we're talking, baby

Oh, that first episode of Akane Banashi. I have some Thoughts for sure. A few quick things I'd say is the animation certainly exceeds what I expected. At times its almost too much, for a series so mundane in action. Voices are all good. Visuals were amazing. The opening is absolutely stellar.

The thing about Akanebanashi is that it's a series not only respectful to classic arts but genuinely interested in the conundrums that follow it (like preservation vs modernization), but also, it's a shonen jump series so it's built like a battle manga. The anime OP rules because it embodies that
