It did not escape me that the bad guys in Zootopia 2 were ostracizing an entire group of animals under the auspices of property expansion for the ICE biome, and neither should it escape you.

Amazon has had many opportunities to create dubbing projects filled with authentic storytelling, emotional connection, and believability. Instead they have chosen to create AI slop dubs of Banana Fish, Vinland Saga, and No Game No life. Many are calling these dubs "insulting" and "disrespectful".

I'm a firm believer in "Everyone is entitled to their informed opinion.", but the informed part is key. For media, that means they had to actually read the book, watch the movie or show, listen to the song/album, play the game, etc. And the same rule applies to myself, too, obviously.

AI dubs aren't just an attempt to replace voice actors. Engineering, mixing, writing, directing, and QC are also cut, narrowed down to a single prompter. When I write dub scripts, it is an exercise in musicality, translation, and personal life experience. A prompter understands none of that.

The reason why this hurts so much is because every dubbing studio in the Los Angeles area has been hit with at least one wave of layoffs or a significant reduction in the amount of contractors that have been hired. All that devastation to our economy, for this?

Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from. tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this. 🧵⬇️

I've noticed this. A lot.

This is not only insulting to the art, medium, and voice actors, but also to the viewers.

Seeing OTHER anime being AI dubbed, including shows that have already been dubbed proper by other studios no less (No Game No Life and Dororo via Sentai Filmworks) is such a telling sign of how greedy Amazon is being. Disrespectful to the creators, clients, studios AND the audience when you use AI.

While we're all talking about dubs today, some of y'all could stand to be more vocal whenever there are issues brought up about about accessibility or labor regarding dubs because it feels like a lot of folks only ever get loud about dubs when it involves some translation choice you don't like

Dubbing will continue to stagnate until serious time and consideration is given to the pattern of severe undercutting that is prevalent in the industry. Budgets are getting slashed on workers who were already expected to cut corners with low pay. Adapters and translators are your backbone.
