Assisted Dying Bill, Is assisted dying a ‘choice’ when there is a pressing need for funding for palliative care services? Charities & community services face resource constraints, shortage of district nurses, & primary care systems under huge strain. Adequate social care remains a critical concern.

On assisted dying I'm genuinely open to all debate and have no fixed view but many of the egs given are people who already have choice in their lives or power over what happens to them in other areas. How does this interact with poverty/complex social backgrounds/difficult family dynamics etc.

These are noble goals & values, but hard to operationalize. Individualized needs-based assessment is time-intensive & dependent on referral sources being willing to do the work. There is an infinite amount of need in healthcare. #PalliativeCare workforce is not always staffed to take all that on.

#PalliativeCare across the globe is not necessarily funded or staffed to be medically complex care for extended periods (few years or more) at scale.

You talk about palliative care as a specific team of providers. Some folks need specialist palliative care, but everyone with advanced illness needs and deserves a palliative approach. This is a shared responsibility. There are many benefits, including better, more efficient health resource use.

“Individualized needs-based assessment” should be an essential component of all health care. Our systems are designed to place patients into boxes. We need to change the paradigm of all care to a person-centred model rather a systems-centred one. Idealism, btw is absolutely necessary.

We do for sure Kelly and with no disrespect to my beloved profession we don't strengthen the weak by weakening the strong so rather than tearing down others, what can we learn from their success and emulate it while still being us HT @leannehpatrick.bsky.social @jesslsainbury.bsky.social #NurseSky
