A helpful visualization to compare the recent ICE escalations in Chicago by
@kcinbk.bsky.social
with data from
ICEOut.org
. In the past month, the number of requests for legal immigration services made to the Resurrection Project have also about doubled, from 900 to more than 1,700.

People are saying these are ravens based on their size. But the crows who live in my neighborhood (and atop my building) are nearly the size of my dog.

Banana Yoshimoto Patrick Modiano Andrey Kurkov Michel Houellebecq Kundera and Ugresic have recently passed. Tartt doesn't write enough books. I think Hemon and Gavalda come in at 4. If we both live a while longer Tom Cox could make the list. I'm probably forgetting someone...

Sorry, this is just going to be an Éric Rohmer fan account for a while. That cool? Amazing Richard Brody review of ÉLISABETH in the NEW YORKER.
loading . . .
Éric Rohmer’s Novel “Élisabeth” Is a Precocious Literary Triumph
Before he had any interest in movies, Rohmer was a writer, and his 1946 début is a fine-grained vision of small-town lives in prewar France.

I don't know what is going on with graphics these days, but it's sheer anarchy. Can't remember the last time I encountered a visual aid that was comprehensible on its own or accurately reflected the data in the text. And I'm not just talking about AI slop.

It's just before 9am in Chicago. Kidnappings by masked federal police continue (and continue, and continue). So far this morning, agents have been spotted in Back of the Yards and West Ridge.

Having dinner on the balcony and a black helicopter just did a patrol down the lakefront. Completely unrelatedly, a girl whom I have only seen once and that was the day of the ICE raid here just came walking past carrying a cat on her shoulders.

I saw this earlier this year and still routinely think about it. The plot is entertaining and also frustrating but Jodie Foster's performance, and how her character is written, is so fucking refreshing.

Last night I watched Project Hail Mary. I'm relieved that we're making old fashioned Hollywood movies again. Feels like the 80s. Not sure why a scientifically advanced species is depicted as a cuddly, male-coded, pet rock who purrs. But I liked that lady who was on trial for killing her husband.

Shout out to everyone who has never had to unendorse a Nazi because you already knew trying to win an election by appealing to the Nazi vote was morally reprehensible. Shout out to everyone who has never said Nazism is tolerable but I draw the line at (crime the Nazi got caught doing.)

These kids have their home country announcers trash talking them. I'm sure that's super helpful for morale. In fairness, these announcers have been terrible from the beginning. No heart at all.

American Fascism is just the kid in 4th grade saying his dad is going to sue you after you ratted him out to the principal for stealing everyone's lunch money. What a bunch of delusional and deeply insecure losers.

Anyway, just to be clear: Gianni Infantino is Swiss. I know his name and the whole nonchalant corruption vibe make it sound like like he’s our fault. But this one is not on us. He’s Swiss.
