If I’m struggling with group therapy and group planning in school, does this mean I’m supposed to send a huge thank you email to my therapists who run the suicide group I’m in? I can’t imagine the planning at the start of that, before we all found out how wonderful it was!

I’m so excited for the new autism funding model - because it means community care. I know people are up in arms about it because those who make over $100000 per year will lose some funding if their kid isn’t MSN/HSN, but this is what community IS. Allowing space for those most in need.

Piano teachers: we need structure, strict rules, discipline. Standards protect serious students. We need kids to sit with frustration. Me: LOL I teach a much harder entry-level instrument and my chaos gremlins know they are allowed to question anything I say and take a break whenever they need it!

Class notes: Eye contact is very important. Eye contact shows respect and that you are paying attention. My presentation (to a class with no Deaf or HoH students): We listen with our ears and not our eyes, so I am not offended if you don’t make eye contact with me for the rest of my presentation.

I’ve got a good comparison now: measurement to mental health care is like what musicology is to music. Are data collection and analyses important? Yes. But is that what matters at the end of the day? Is that what heals people and keeps us human? No.

Growth is realizing that talking about autism online isn’t my jam anymore, and hasn’t been since autism moms rebranded themselves as “TikTok diagnosed autistic moms”. Most of my advocacy happens in actions offline anyway. I’m just sad the autism community has turned into such an unsafe space.
