I would suggest staying away from the strong action verbs to describe Trump's actions. The story is less the degree of energy in his assertions than the catastrophically dangerous policies he is pursuing.

The Democratic leaders in Congress have repeatedly shown that they have no interest in leading an effective opposition. They have no appetite for the legislative trench warfare this moment requires. They don't even have the will to speak about it clearly. They just want to be left alone.

Let's remember that MLK was assassinated while in Memphis supporting African American sanitation workers who were, despite CNN's weird definition, actually members of the working class.

If he wants to declare martial law, he will. It won't be based on reality. I don't know why some people continue to say: "be peaceful or he'll invoke martial law." Are you all living in this country in 2026???? Haven't you seen them make things up out of whole cloth???? Are you 10 years old?

Read the whole thread. Gregg is right. It’s NOT a question of “experts disagree.” I’ve been working in medicine, medical journalism or global health for 32 years & know a LOT of health professionals—I do not know a *single one* who supports RFK Jr’s dangerous dismantling of the US vaccine system.

Trump’s imperialistic fantasy of the rapid takeover of multiple countries (some of them allies) is the foreign policy analogue of the DOGE shock and awe effort at the beginning of his second term, and, if he attempts this, will also end in failure, but with much infinitely more collateral damage.

Watching all these centrist pundits stress the “civility” of Charlie Kirk’s style without addressing the ugliness of his substance is giving me a renewed appreciation of how the civil, polite White Citizens’ Councils conned the same crowd into thinking they were distinct from the cruder Klan.

Being lawless does not make Trump omnipotent – nor can he just snap his fingers and make all his authoritarian desires a reality. America is in an acutely dangerous situation. But obscuring those distinctions is an act of defeatism that only serves the regime.

How is the president seeing "dollar signs" and using the money for his pet programs a legal predicate for punishing universities? If Joe Biden "saw dollars signs" in car dealerships and demanded that they pay fines to fund green energy programs, would the Times cover it this way?

Much of what Mamdani proposes happened in the U.S. during the period we know as the "New Deal Order." Portraying a left New Dealism, even one under the banner of democratic socialism, that emphasizes affordability, better public goods, and experimentation as "burning it all down" seems extreme.
