The phrase "comfort character" rubs me the wrong way and I don't know how to unpack it yet.

I've discussed this on Tumblr, but: I have gotten FAR more harassment from self-described "pr0shippers" for talking about bigotry in fandom than I have from "antis" for my many, many fics with controversial content. It's not even remotely a contest between the two categories.

The incredibly weird experience when you wrote several thousand words at white hot speed last week, and you read it over and you're like, wow I didn't remember this stuff happened.

This is why I'm wary of published books that used to be fanfic. It's not because I think they're all shallow trash. It's because I don't trust (ymmv) that the author, agent, or editor know *why a fanfic can be good in the first place,* nor how to translate that into standalone stories.

The way to fight against All Art is Content capitalist consumption habits, specifically in fandom, is to associate fanwork with the people that create it, and to engage with them (politely, in appropriate channels).

Lots of "[Character] enthusiastically learns about kink from a more experienced partner" fics have the latter be the dominant, and honestly I want more fics where an experienced sub talks their partner through being a dom(me) for the first time.

"Curate your space!" and "just use filters!" re AO3 (and other fanspaces) only works if there are robust *and evolving* tools to do so and an active content moderation team willing AND able to enforce the proper implementation of those tools.
