anyway listen i don't want to sound like a cringy "fandom old" or what the fuck ever, but. genuinely. truly. it's going to be okay. i know the prospect of losing discord as a primary communications platform seems scary- and it is. i'm not trying to invalidate that. but our communities will survive

anyways, don't get off discord yet; not because this isn't heinous but because we're currently in the post-horror scramble to find alternatives. give things a second to settle down so you can find out which ones suck and which ones don't. instead, cancel your nitro, yell at discord, and plan.

My whole goddamn life as a kid in the 90s and 00s, my parents told me "Never give strangers on the internet your real name. Never tell strangers where you live. Never tell strangers where you go to school. Never post pictures of your face online" and now companies everywhere want my goddamn ID.

the reality is no one is going to move off discord bc no one wants to move to a program with fewer friends and fewer features. there is no ready-made discord alternative that can emulate it 1:1, and even if there was, people still would be reticent to move. there is no perfect solution.

you don't need to panic. no one is demanding you give up your social circles. no one is expecting you to ditch discord out of some moral obligation. just do what you can to push back and hopefully we can move the needle.

doomerism over discord alternatives is only going to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. stay where you are but hedge your bets. be aware of the options, and be ready to dip if you feel the winds blowing in that direction. sandbagging alternatives helps no one and nothing.

this is not a call to action to fully uproot everything that was created on discord. i'm not even telling you to delete your discord accounts. cancel nitro. do what you must. but also understand that it's always better to seek alternatives in the event that discord becomes unusable.

Alright, you already know how this goes. Cancel Nitro, remind them why this is unsafe if you can, and keep alternatives on the back-burner while accepting that they may be downgraded experiences. Above all though, do not throw your account away until you feel the service becomes actually unusable
