Sixty years ago last week, The Beatles recorded what is, in my opinion, the greatest song that Paul McCartney ever wrote. A two minute meditation on the end of love with a baroque melody and simple, beautiful, perfectly observed lyrics.

Handy guide for reporters … A claim is made about the impact of tax policy. Test: is it true (you find out). If yes: you have a story. If no: it isn’t a story. Reporting government denial of something that isn’t real … that’s also not a story.

I'm not sure what the weirdest social thing about Covid was - the inability of a large part of society to deal with major uncertainty without losing their shit, or another large part of society that fell in love with the authoritarianism required to manage it, and want to regularly bring it back

Mamdani has demonstrated something that Democrats have largely forgotten. You can't just do good things for voters and expect to be rewarded for it. You have to tell them about it, over and over again. You have to advertise your work in office just as much as you did on the campaign to win it.

The AEC needs to drop the hammer on both the party ultimately responsible, and the dipshit that signed their authorisation name to it. Protecting your democracy is like everything else important - if you don't hang the perpetrators in the town square, everyone thinks the costs are worth the effort

, stop saying that it's up to us to stop Reform. YOU could stop a Reform government in 2029, by introducing the proportional representation so many in the country have been clamouring for. The only way Farage can win is through our crazy first-past-the-post system.

Colleague at first job brought in cake every time Stoke won. Didn't have much interest in football but started looking up results to see if I'd get cake. Her Pavlov training worked: 20 years later - no longer in touch with her, but this London boy is a Stoke season ticket holder.
