Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth again, it's just that the weird treatment-resistant gastroparesis I have fought for the last twelve years of my life has almost definitely been IBD all along and nothing feels real anymore.

Radiolaria are microscopic unicellular sea creatures that create skeletons from silica. Their skeletons are among the most beautiful and complex natural microstructures, resembling elaborate filigree. blog post:

Found an old photo of one of my favourite mushroom sightings - a magpie inkcap :) Haven’t seen any this year (or since); this was taken in a nearby woodland on this day in 2017.

I was sure this gravel stuck in scrambled egg thing was Rhizocarpon geographica, but the lichenologist instructor said you’d never be sure about Rhizocarpons unless you do DNA test. Fascinating, anyway. Ikenotaira, Tomi, Nagano

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.

It’s really hard to describe to people who are not artists how survival mode does *not* inspire creativity, as the myth would have us believe. It suppresses creativity as you try to limit every possible risk – and the opportunities that come with them.

The Hippocampus is a mythical creature with the front of a horse and the back half of a fish. They've been portrayed by cultures from the Ancient Greeks to the Picts and beyond My take here is partly based on a black-figure amphora from the 6th century BCE that currently is displayed in the Louvre

Time for an oldie - a photo taken the 1st time I ever visited the south-east of

(4th visit to the country). It was a very miserable day, & I barely saw any of the wonders due to low cloud, but occasionally it lifted & was very atmospheric. Had better views on the return journey! March 2012.

In moments like these, we are asked to treat others as expendable, ready sacrifices that will supposedly protect against additional harm. That has never, historically, been the case—they will continue to devour, over and over, until there is either no one left or they are stopped. 1/

We're nearing the end of my year behind the lens (one more big trip), which means I'll soon start narrowing down my favorite shots of 2025. This was one of my '24 faves (taken in BC), in part because I was dealing with failing gear at the time. It felt like a miracle even getting this to turn out.
