Just wrapped up a day tour along the Chilean coast, where we scored some views of Humboldt Penguins, Inca Terns, Black-browed Albatross, and even a marine otter. This wraps up my adventure down here, and I fly home starting tonight. Hope to share more new photos soon!

Yellowstone 2008: during my first ever winter trip to the park, I don’t think I realized how big of a role winter bison would ultimately play in my career. This bull was being a bit frisky in the Lamar Valley.

Our adventures in Patagonia may have peaked in the past 36 hours thanks to our time spent with this cute pair of puma cubs. Their energy is boundless, as is Mom’s patience!

Bouncing back to some of the reprocessed images from my 2008 Yellowstone trips, here’s a yearling wolf we saw out on its own one day. Not sure why it had dispersed from its pack, but without a reunion it seemed the chances of survival would ultimately be pretty low.

I’ve kicked off my latest adventures in Patagonia. Though we’re here for cats, we’ll photograph just about any sort of wildlife, including this handsome Gray-hooded Sierra Finch. In a landscape of browns and grays, this is one of the more colorful denizens around.

Looking back at my 2008 Yellowstone adventures, the highlight of that year’s trips was probably my first ever session with black bear cubs of the year.

In 2008 I made trips to Yellowstone in winter, spring and fall. While autumn colors on the trees attract a lot of folks, those long blonde fall grasses make quite a nice setting for wildlife pics too.

I'm heading out on my next trip today, which usually means a "takeoff" shot. Here's a Trumpeter Swan photographed in Alaska a few years back. My first ever proper bobcat encounter occurred in Pinnacles National Park back in 2015. I'd been hoping to photograph bobcats in Yellowstone for years without much luck, but traveling south to see the skinny California bobcats finally accomplished the goal.

The Hamerkop is a bit of a character. Aside from the namesake head shape, I like how it shuffles around doing a little cha-cha in the water, in hopes of kicking up a frog or aquatic bug to eat. (South Africa 2010)

My first ever coral snake, the Amazonian coral from Peru. We found it during a rain storm, and as I was photographing it, a different, smaller type of coral slithered through the leaf litter nearby and vanished.

This is one of the more memorable wolf encounters I've ever had in Yellowstone, much less on tour... but it wasn't all pleasant. We were standing on a bridge with other groups looking downriver when this wolf popped out of the trees right in front of everyone...

Owls are one of the top targets during my winter Yellowstone adventures, but they're not easy to find. This Great Gray, which we encountered in the park interior last year, was the first I've ever seen during a winter visit here. Will we find another in 2027? Join me on a winter trip to find out!

Yellowstone Winter Memories: One of the more elusive species we search for on my winter tours is the American Marten. We've been lucky a few in recent years. This was my only time photographing a pair together. btw- We now have 2 spots open on the Feb. 6 - 13, 2027 tour, 1 on the Jan. 6 - 13 trip.

Celebrating the release of my '27 winter Yellowstone tour schedule, I'm sharing some frozen scenes from the park this week. Bison are becoming more of a favorite subject during winter trips lately. It's such an iconic and photogenic animal, especially in winter. This scene was photographed in 2018.

Prices have been finalized for my '27 winter Yellowstone tours, so why not share some memories from past winter adventures this week? The winter of '16 was a banner fox year. We sometimes had 6-7 fox sightings per day. In this case we actually had two otters one way... and a backlit fox the other!

I will never forget seeing my first Andean Condor up close. While driving our rental car down a highway in Patagonia, one suddenly took off from a roadside carcass. My first instinct was that a Datsun had been launched out of the bushes at us, this bird was so big. Thankfully, I kept us on the road.

Most of my King Vulture sightings involve a dot soaring a few hundred meters overhead, but we got lucky in January when we found this pair perched on the banks of the Rupununi River in Guyana. This is definitely one of the world’s prettiest vultures (Lammergeier is another contender)!

Back in 2021 I captured very similar images of two closely-related raptors, the Bald Eagle and African Fish Eagle, soaring over their respective environments (San Juan Islands and Kruger NP, respectively). As a result, I can't ever seem to post one of these photos without the other.

Here's one of the black morph gray squirrels found just across the border in British Columbia. I've yet to see one here in Washington.

I'll hopefully be returning to South Africa later this year, and can't help but think back to my first visit there in 2010. The highlight of that trip was spending time with this female leopard and her tiny cub.

High above the forest floor, an inch-long giant forest ant scurries up a guy wire for its evening commute to the tree tops in Malaysian Borneo.

A gull flies past an inlet in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest. Can't wait to be back exploring this stunning landscape this fall.

A pair of collared peccaries crosses a trail in the forests of Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park. Corcovado is one of my favorite places on earth. The diversity of species we see there during my tours always amazes. Heading back next year if you'd like to join me! ;)

It's a day of reflection for me, so I'm thinking back to early adventures and special moments from my time behind the lens. In my early years I was just getting started exploring (and falling in love with) Yellowstone. This pika was photographed during a hike up Mt. Washburn some 23 years ago.

Those completely random moments with "Subheader Species" often help fill my wildlife experiences & turn a good trip into a great one. Last year we approached 5-6 boats puttering near a sleeping jaguar in Brazil. BORING! But hundreds of tiny catfish, randomly burbling on the surface nearby? Awesome!

A pair of bighorn rams hang out along Yellowstone's northwest border. Larger herds of sheep usually gather here in winter, in part because the area gets much less snow than the rest of the park, making foraging easier.

Splish, splash! A Roseate Spoonbill takes a bath in the Rio Tarcoles in Costa Rica.

I don't obsess over individual animals like some wildlife groupies, but there's no denying that certain characters simply leave a bigger impression. Also, I don't dig nicknames, but "The Dark" had a pretty cool one, and boy, was he badass.

The Northern Flickers were tapping on the side of the house again this morning. 'Tis the season, I suppose. One fun thing about this species is that the females actually vie for attention from the males, even displaying for them (as seen in this frame from Yellowstone).

We didn't stick around to see how this Neotropic Cormorant was going to manage its meal.

A little over a month before I return to southern Chile. And yes, we do try to photograph more than just pumas. Here's a guanaco on a frigid morning.

I'm fortunate to have two trips to Africa lined up later this year (unless the current political crisis interferes with flights), so I guess that means more attempts at capturing Lilac-breasted Rollers in flight!

You guys constantly surprise me. Unlike on other platforms, if I post a creepy crawly photo here, it actually gets a largely positive response. So I'll diverge from the Yellowstone content momentarily and share another close-up subject from the old days. Here is Boana punctata, Ecuador 2006.

Yellowstone doesn't have many snake species, but there are a few around. This is the first one I ever photographed, the wandering garter snake. I've seen them a few times at this location (the edges of a small lake) since then. The park has one venomous snake—a rattler—but I have yet to see it!
