Skylight has been kicking my ass for the past five days. Basically all of the problems can be traced back to the changes I had to make when we shut down servers in November. That left some deep scars in this codebase.

@jimray.bsky.team @hailey.at FYI you can make the oauth-client-expo package Expo Go compatible. The big blocker was DPoP but Expo 54 added Worklets which would allow you to do the DPoP calculations in JS without blocking the UI thread. That + switching mmkv to secure store should do the trick!

I regret saying this, I don’t actually think that every app having a PDS is the solution. IMO some form of sub-accounts and account merging is more promising. I think having a PDS provider that you trust more than your apps is the way. I just also think people will want more than one account.

I’d say we tried the TikTok clone thing and it was just a bad way to go. Skylight v3 has overlap with TikTok but Skylight v1 was eclipsed by it. Ironically we are a more viable TikTok replacement today because we are more of a Bluesky client :)

TikTok has been broken all day. All of our videos are under review and their just about comic books. They bought it and immediately broke the site.

1.4 million videos were played on Skylight yesterday 🤯 literally 3x from the day before. This increase was from all areas: +150% on sign ups +50% on returning users +40% on videos played (average) +60% on videos played (median) +100% on posts created And record low issues getting in to the app.

It did! This was a 6000 line refactor that touched 90 files and I did it with Claude in a day. We moved from Jotai + a custom async state library to Zustand + Tanstack Query + Tanstack DB So far the only issues were a circular import and a race condition.

Just did a large refactor of state management in skylight. Let’s see if I can still make posts…

Why we shouldn’t have separate follow graphs (yet)

The hardest part of building a social app is bootstrapping a social network. There are benefits to having distinct social graphs but IMO you are also making the hard part harder. I think people are taking a principled stance on a practical issue. There is more than one solution to this problem.

IMO the answer to “how much should we integrate with Bluesky” today is different than the answer two years from now. Today, the AT Protocol is competing against larger, established networks. That’s the problem to solve. That probably means the right strategy is to create one big network.

If you aren’t on X you might not know what happened to me on there regarding grok producing sexual and violent images so I want to show this example. It is doing this to women by the thousands and in some cases to children.

TikTok’s algorithm is messed up today showing a lot of videos from a couple months ago. This might be step 1 for setting up a new algorithm.
