I am not a prolific recorder of moth leafmines, and I'm not very structured either, just checking greenery en route as I amble about. Very occasionally I'll be more focussed on a particular host or target species. There is plenty of time, but 61 spp. recorded so far this year. #vc55moths #teammoth

A fun few hours with the traps on Caerphilly Mountain last night produced some quality moths. Heath Rustic, Autumnal Rustic, Spiny Hook-tip and Anomalous the best of the macro-moths. Also my third Clifden Nonpareil of the year. 1/2 #TeamMoth

Caloptilia honoratella - first mine and then first leaf fold at Oxborough Hall this afternoon #norfolkmoths

2/2 Bucculatrix bechsteinella makes tiny white tick mines close to a vein initially. Then the larvae graze under a leaf making tiny graze marks (see photo). They form white cocoonets under the leaf to protect themselves whilst moulting (common Bucculatrix feature). Larvae are very hard to spot!

Hawthorn mines from our hedge Parornix anglicella - look for the leaf tip bent over to form a cone - green then turns brown. A good beginner mine! Phyllonorycter leucographella and corylifoliella- white and ‘dirty’ coverings. corylifoliella at edge of leaf has contracted to close leaf upwards 1/2

Some common migrants last night included this nicely marked Pearly Underwing, Four-spotted Footman, Scarce Bordered Straw, Dark Sword-grass, 12 Palpita vitrealis & 5 Delicate. Also a small, pale Coast Dart, Ancylosis oblitella & 2 Clay Triple-lines NFG (no local Beech) #teammoth

The Obs moth-traps were spectacularly lame for migrants overnight so a bit unexpected to get home and find a Passenger - the third for the island this autumn - in one of the Grove traps; also another Striped Hawk there. Weirdest catch at the Obs in recent nights a late Obscure Wainscot on 23rd.

I've initiated a review of Dark Marbled Carpet (Dysstroma citrata) in VC39 Staffordshire. ~50% of the records are unsafe, being outside of the flight period of July and August (+/- either side) in the south of Britain. Probably down to misIdent of Common Marbled Carpet (D. truncata) #MothsMatter

A very interesting week of weather on the way, with thunderstorms, high temperatures & Saharan dust (which has already reached SW Britain). A tropical night (min 20c) in store for some areas tonight, with a keen E Wind on the S coast. Tonight looks good, Tues & Weds even better. #teammoth

The mean number of butterflies on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects is now very low as compared to other years since 1990 (though 2024 was worse). With such low numbers flowers in gardens also stay empty: there are simply no butterflies around to visit them.

David Healey from Felixstowe sent us these photographs hoping but doubting he had found a Southern Small White. They appear to be a Green-veined White with a heavily marked upperside and lightly marked underside. The dark scales along the veins can just be seen. Unless someone thinks differently.

The next generation of Southern Small White (P mannii) has started, I just made this photo in the garden. You notice them as they are a bit smaller than Small Whites and have a slightly different way of flying. This generation should have a large and dark square middle spot (as on the photo).
