From Landguard, Very busy moth night in the hot humid conditions. Third site record of Scarce Black Arches (left) which is an immigrant species was the pick of the bunch. First site record of Pale Shoulder (right)which is a rare immigrant to our shores.

Last week I joined the UGent 3rd bachelor biology field course at the Belgian west coast, close to one of the places where Synanthedon theryi was discovered new to Belgium 5 years ago. So I took the opportunity to search for it, it reacts to pheromone lure for six-belted clearwing. #mothsmatter

I can’t quite believe this but I think this is Enolmis acanthella that was in my trap in Dunmow, Essex overnight. ObsID suggests so and a check of Lepiforum backs that up. Mompha idaei, a new British species. Last week photos of what appeared to be this species were posted to a regional moths facebook group from NE Scotland. I travelled up to the site today to meet Dr Mark Young and see if we could re-find and verify. In total 11 individuals were found #teammoth

Last night Conisania luteago came to light at the trap of Dries De Vreeze in Ghent. This noctuid species is expanding its range in France & Germany, has been seen in the Netherlands once but is #newtoBelgium! Dries is a #migrantmoth magnet, he always pics out the best nights to trap! #mothsmatter

PUSS MOTH early development. 1. Eggs found on upperside of Goat Willow Leaf, Long Melford, Suffolk. 28/05/26. 2. 1st instar larva (hatched 03/06/26). 3. 2nd instar larva (shed skin 07/06/26). The larva ate its shed skin apart from the tails. #mothsmatter

From Landguard, Moth trapping: 21 species caught last night, with 3 new species for this year: Sandy carpet, Garden Pebble & the Vine moth, today’s focus species. The Vine is a nationally scarce species with landguard being its Suffolk stronghold, the larvae most likely living on the Ivy berries.

1st trap of the year produced a lifer, Great Prominent (scarce in N.E. Suffolk) with 2 Diamond-back & a Silver Y also at least 10 Painted Lady heading north through the garden

Coleophora binderella (Alder Case-bearer). Larva and cases of three individuals found around Long Melford in Suffolk over the last couple of days. All were on Hazel (despite the common name the larvae feed on Hazel, Hornbeam and Birch as well as Alder). Nice to find. #teammoth

Birders, unless you are doing a point count there's not a lot of point in submitting butterfly records in BirdTrack. The location data are rarely precise enough to be of value. For butterfly records, can you please use iRecord, or iRecord butterflies. With at least Tetrad (e.g TL1234) resolution
