In both the cases of the shooting of Renee Good and of Alex Pretti, everybody had seen the videos. There was much more of a sense after Renee Good's shooting that bad things can happen. The Alex Pretti shooting - there's no ambiguity with voters. They are fed up with ICE's tactics.

Federal agents hiding behind masks contributes to abuses. It signals no accountability. It lets agents know they can act as a nameless, faceless, camouflaged, armed abuser and nobody will know who did it. It is antithetical to everything this liberty loving country stands for.

As we await Senate action on the remaining spending bills, remember that Susan Collins could make a difference by stripping out DHS from the rest of the government funding bills. But she won't because she is just as MAGA as the rest of them.

The killing of Alex Pretti and the grotesque lying was an overreach by the administration. They've paid a price and had to pull back a bit. But it's when there's some disarray that the democratic opposition needs to intensify the offensive, and turn a marginal tactical success into a major victory.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Bovino is just the patsy - a noxious and odious fall guy. Stephen Miller is the architect and prime mover of the whole thing. Everything they do is at his direction - often after his threats. As long as he runs policy in the WH, nothing will change no matter how many Bovinos come and go.

I'm sure a few ICE agents suspect this already, but it seems very clear that DJT, Miller & Bovino WANT an ICE agent to get killed. They need their own martyr. There is a reason they are putting them in increasingly volatile situations.
