A lot of beat em ups kinda fail to understand the utility of special moves when making huge changes to other aspects of design. They make super fast combo games but then still design special moves as crowd control utility, and it's like brother what are you doing no one can hit me anyways.

I also think a lot of gamers underestimate the power of just naturally enjoying the thing you love & how people gravitate to that You won’t have to tell people to play a game for some greater cause, you won’t have pit it against another game Sincere passion is contagious (and good for you)

When talking about games, one thing I've tried to actively delete from my vocabulary is 'It's not for everyone'. Because duh, nothing is. Instead, I want to say 'This is for people who love X or Y, but if you're expecting Z, you'll probably bounce off'. Specific understanding of tastes and appeals.

A random youtube video just reminded me of a pair of genuinely great freeware gems - Vacant Ark and Iwanaga, a pair of very Treasure-inspired experimental freeware shmups from a developer known only as Buster who just kinda disappeared from the scene. They are both very cool and hold up great today

Whenever I see a review mark an arcade game down for being short and built to be replayed, I immediately question every opinion that writer has ever held. It's like complaining that there's too many moving pictures in a film, or that a drink is too wet.

Oh, there's also Sekitori, which looks like an excellent spin on the Geometry Wars formula. Not had a chance to play it early, but the developer has done some great stuff previously and I've got a good feeling about this one.

Got a couple arcade bangers out this week - I've played both, they're legit. Vertically scrolling shmup Birdcage, which has some Radiant Silvergun inspiration but is faster and more aggressive. And side-scrolling run n' gunner Neon Inferno. Contra meets Cabal with a 'shoot the background' button.

On one hand, I'm happy that a company like 8ing keeps going and evolving... on the other hand, at what cost? Sadly, this is the reality of the industry and fighting against it is a lost cause. Feels like the moment animation changed from handmade to digital only.

I'm a little sad that Clover Pit is the game by Panik Arcade/Matt Godwarf to be a breakout hit, when Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom and Project Starship X flew under the radar. Check those out if juicy, chaotic games (3D platformer and roguelike shmup respectively) are your thing more than gambling.
