The Myth of a Rightward Realignment Let’s discard some stubborn misconceptions about Trump’s support and what happened in the 2024 election. They are only obscuring our understanding of a profound de-alignment. As the piece is partially behind a paywall, I’ll share some key thoughts: 🧵

What about “education polarization” though, often presented as the root cause of everything that is happening in U.S. politics – the closest thing we have to a widely accepted master narrative? Its impact is dramatically overstated; its implications are generally misinterpreted.

Among white people, the correlation between racial resentment and their voting decision is much, much stronger than between educational attainment and political alignment. In fact, if you control for racial resentment, education polarization basically disappears.

Not sure how many people realize that battery storage already supplies 30% of California’s electricity demand at peak. Batteries aren’t the future — they’re here now.

People shouldn't act like affluent college educated suburban Republicans are somehow more moderate than Republican voters as a whole, it might been true back in 2012, but not now

Yep it's not an education thing. Highly educated Republicans are *more* likely to be climate deniers than less educated Republicans. It's conservative ideology and far right media.

Also if non white voters aren't actually a monolith for Dems, then we should pay more attention towards class voting as a whole, not just whites, also you can split up white voters by different religious sects

Presidential vote among whites shows continued income polarization (data from

I think the 2008 data is off since Romney did noticeably better in affluent white precincts, and didn't do that much better in a lot of poor white areas

Mamdani is the greatest campaigner of the modern era. I have some skepticism about his policies, but you can't deny that he's managed to break into both highly educated liberal and low info voter spaces. If he was 10% less Muslim/socialist he'd be a future president (and maybe despite that...).

The 2025 NY Special election in NY SD-22, a contest between Dem Sephardic community leader Sam Sutton and GOP Attorney Nachman Carl Caller following the resignation of Simcha Felder to take a seat on the New York City Council proved an easy hold for Dems in this Orthodox seat

Tricia Cotham made national news when she switched from the Dems to the GOP in 2023, handing the North Carolina GOP a supermajority and receiving a favorable district in redistricting. Her

The three Dems dropping dead was bad but not actually pivotal in anything. Under a realistic gerrymander of New York however (see below), Dems would’ve had three more seats, and thus the house majority.

this isn’t even true. here’s a chart from David Shor showing how climate change and the environment is one of the strongest issues for democrats! the problem is that it’s low salience!

Update - Given the breakup of the coalition, this is the new seat-count: Labor 94, Libs 29, Nats 15, Independents/others 11, Greens 1. In doubt: - Calwell(Lab vs Ind) Labor is favoured due to expected preference flows - Bradfield(Lib vs Ind) Genuine coin toss Shades: elected/likely/ahead

Some account chimed in to defend David Shor from accusations that he's a race "realist" (read: racist), but their account had zero followers and followed zero other people and exclusively posted to defend David Shor. When I pointed that out, they deactivated lmao

St. Louis, Missouri, adopted two significant reforms to her elections in ~recent years: In 2012, voters cut the number of Alders from 28 to 14, taking effect after the 2020 Census. In 2020, voters adopted a top-two nonpartisan primary with approval voting for city elections.
