Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

And for all the scientists asking “what can we do?”, here’s an interesting suggestion: call your local TV stations and newspapers and tell them you’d be happy to be interviewed. if you do that, please let us know and we’ll share so others can learn.

If my experience has taught me anything about academia, never underestimate the power of active listening, kindness, and compassion. Having people who care enough to listen and mindfully respond, instead of listening to talk is so valuable.

Academic institutions in the US need to seriously consider how they will support and protect their minority faculty during this time. The conditions we face are already hostile for most - targeted attacks and added barriers to advancement will push many to simply walk away.

If the ableism that I’ve experienced in grad school is any indicator, Academia is NOT ready for the consequences of ignoring the science on COVID 19 & the importance of clean air.

Some fam & friends simply don’t “do sick” nor do they respect health safety boundaries during this ongoing pandemic. Oddly enough they then ask why you don’t go to their inaccessible events that have no Covid precautions in place…. 🙄

“Y’all masking?” is a pretty useful flashmob on Twitter. One of my kids is now taking a flight and asked why nobody else but us is masking. I sent him a whole bunch of selfies with masks, of great people from all over the globe. That helps a lot.

Y'all masking? It helps so much to not be alone. I've been masking since the beginning of covid. It helps keep me, someone with health issues, safer. It helps keep others around me safer. It is a sign of empathy and compassion for others and ourselves, and awareness of the harm COVID can cause.

Y'all still masking? With 4+ years of long COVID, I've been sick more times the past 4 years than I have from 2014-2019 (probably longer since I rarely got sick pre-2020). The times I've been sick since 2020, it's been people that stopped masking that I unfortunately can't avoid.
