In 2023, South Africa had an estimated 427 new TB cases per 100,000 people. South Africa is on the WHO's lists of 30 high burden countries for TB, HIV-associated TB, and drug-resistant TB.

Today, in spite of the improvements, tuberculosis remains the number one killer disease in South Africa, and for many people it persists because they have AIDS.

That Health Minister eventually died and the President was also eventually fired, and after that, the government's AIDS policy began to improve.

An activist campaign, the Treatment Action Campaign, rose up and demanded antiretroviral treatment and a sensible approach to preventing and managing HIV/AIDS.

Many people threw caution to the wind, and masses of people became ill with diseases such as tuberculosis, and their immune system couldn't cope. So even if they recovered a little for short periods, they got progressively weaker and died.

Our Minister of Health, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, said the best approach to the disease was just building your immune system through a "healthy lifestyle" with natural foods like beetroot. Our President went along with it.

Many people were in denial about the seriousness of this illness and who it affected. The government was in denial.

But they weren't better. The illness harmed their immune system and made them vulnerable to other infections. The virus is called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and the disease is called AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

But then came a new illness. The new illness had an acute infection stage, after which a person would feel better—kind of like flu.
