Waymo isn’t going to go away if we hold it to specific ambitious safety standards. It’s entirely appropriate especially given that the organization has advertised its safety benefits as its reason for being allowed to operate and scale

Acknowledging the safety status quo on American roads is atrocious, there are good reasons ordinary people don't trust autonomous vehicles. These companies have been beta testing potentially deadly objects on them for years without their explicit consent, for one.

Hold these these autonomous vehicle companies to the standard we hold commercial aviation. (Near perfect safety) Not a tiny bit better than your drunk uncle and 16-yo drivers who are texting (the current road safety standard, which is through the floor)

If we want ordinary people (not pointy-headed wonks) to trust autonomous vehicles, I think a good starting place would be strict liability for the enormous corporations in the case of a crash would be a good starting place.
