If you asked the average Torontonian if the subway system was more "wide" or "tall", I bet 9/10 would say "wide". That's a graphic design problem. The TTC map is typically depicted "squished" to fit above subway doors. In reality, the system covers more ground north-south than east-west.

Put another way, we’ve been convinced that cars represent “freedom” in places where we’ve built car dependency. That dependency took away our freedom, and the car industry convinced us that we could ONLY get it back if we paid whatever increasing costs of car ownership they demand. Some “freedom.”

Never forget, if you design a city for cars, it fails for everyone, including drivers. If you design a multi-modal city that makes walking, biking & public transit attractive options, it works better for everyone, including drivers. INCLUDING DRIVERS. The “war on cars” has always been a lie.

Metrolinx has a new video saying Line 6 “‘makes travel faster & easier” Is that true when the LRT is slower/same speed as the bus most times of day? Is that true when people have to wait longer for less frequent trains than buses, in worse, non-enclosed shelters with poor protection from weather?

I love that the TTC is now dredging up the ~12 year old justifications for the Finch West LRT to justify why its so slow, instead of just . . . making it faster . . .

So unlike the rest of the TTC's fleet of light rail, the Finch line has tap on tap off machines on the platforms but nowhere on the train itself??? They'e set up people to inadvertently forget cuz decades of habit and put them at the mercy of fare enforcement agents who have a *history*.

Don’t forget, for many years #Uber insisted loudly that it would reduce traffic in cities. Instead, Uber drivers cruise without passengers 40% of the time. Uber and Lyft no longer claim they reduce traffic. They now admit they increase congestion. So much for “making cities better…” Via @wsj.com

Good news: Today is opening day for first new transit line to open in #Toronto in a decade. The Finch West LRT has 18 stops, runs 11 kms. Bad: It was expensive, and it's actually slower than the buses that served the route before. That's not a great look for new rail transit projects in Canada.

Bike-lanes don’t cause traffic congestion. Car dependency, dumb land-use sprawl, too many (& bigger) cars being driven too much taking up too much space, highly subsidized driving costs, and not enough choices in how to get around, ALL cause traffic congestion. Think about it. THAT’S common sense.

hot take: poorly maintained walking/biking infrastructure is MORE dangerous than not having it at all because you have to use the car infrastructure and then also worry about people driving more aggressively around you because you aren't in "your" space.

When there's snow, people are going to go where it's safe and not slippery. Clear only the roads? People are going to go on the roads. Want people on sidewalks or bike lanes? We need to clear those with the same priority.

It’s past time we do something about disinformation online, starting with news comment sections. The entire purpose of comment sections was to provide a space for people to discuss issues. But the space is being poisoned by bots and comment farms, where comments and likes can be bought.
