Had little visitor today that did NOT want to leave. I think this a katydid (not) that attached herself to my finger and was most resistant to being sent on her way. Finally managed to get her off without damaging her.

Yep. Front porch doves are back and setting up shop. This is the same nest, three years in a row, three feet from the front door, right at face level. Watching for the granite countertops upgrade, but no sign yet.

Looks like the FRONT PORCH DOVES are considering setting up shop again. One of them sitting in the window sill, ultra dirty window filter on full.

There are currently 6 billionrobins (roughly) in my yard, and they've been here all day consuming juniper berries and draining my birdbaths. My cars parked outside are gonna need some hosing down sometime soon.

Haven't done this in awhile. It's time for another batch of sausage. 10 lbs of pork shoulder, red and black pepper, fresh ginger, brown sugar, toasted fennel seeds and fresh sage, a bit of maple syrup. A couple months of good breakfast ahead.

Assemble the winter bird caucus for coffee. Done. Have 40 or so of each all yell at once. Done. Really rowdy bunch this am.

Set up a birdy hot tub for the first time to get ready for the ick that was coming. It's cold, but the precip wasn't as bad as predicted. No takers that I've seen yet, but it's only been there for a couple of days.

Having my annual northern flicker visit right now, but I can’t see him. Vocal but hidden in the evergreens.

Thinking about firing up the heater to enjoy a cool day and coffee with the birds. Little did I suspect the birds had other plans.

It’s a beautiful, cool Christmas morning with coffee and birds. Little wren sitting about 10 feet away on the fence. And a pair of hawks doing some sort of dance in the air against a silvery sky as the sun comes up. Another dozen species all starting their daily routines. Nice way to start the day.

Merlin is quite convinced that a REALLY annoyed squirrel barking and chattering at me is a crow. Merlin can’t be reasoned with.

Must be winter. Cedar Waxwings and Butterbutts appearing together on cue.

Matched pair of mourning dove hatchlings. These guys are nesting at face level right by the front door. Mom was off looking for breakfast, so I captured this as I headed out to the car today.

Flip side of spring. Not a lot of bugs out yet, and this robin is contemplating eating an old, dry holly berry.

Well... I guess spring has sprung. I'm thrilled to report I've got a nesting pair of Eastern Phoebes who have honored me by building a nest over my front door. They've been absent for the past couple of springs, but they've returned. Not great pics, but I'm just happy to see these kids back again!

Hi nature fans... Can anyone tell me what these are? 4 - 8 inches tall, mud pyramids along the side of a retention pond. I'm guessing turtle or frog related, but I've never seen these before. LOTs of them all along the muddy edge of the pond.

Just for the sake of starting things off on the new site, a rehash from the old site. A goodly sized copperhead that stopped by while I was doing yard work. I helped him over the low wood fence and he took off for greener pastures.
