Growing up in California, my parents saw the Bracero Program. Workers could legally come from Mexico, work, and return home with money to help their families. There were some legal protections, too, although not as much as they deserved, hence unions. Why can't we do a modern version now?

I met a guy once who was a prepper. Built an off-grid compound with one entrance that had steep banks on both sides so you couldn't drive around the gates. I thought he was nuts. Now I'm not so sure.
